When I hear happy I think of not dark/depressing. For this I think Miriodor (especially their albums Jongleries Elastiques, Mekano, and Parade) and French TV fit the bill. Samla Mammas Manna are a good mention here as well, as most of their stuff is lighter and zany.

Also, in the realm of not really dark, Mr. Bungle and Estradasphere come to mind. Both bands are big on humorous musical events and/or lyrics so I'm not sure these two would fit your tastes. But, I recommend Palace Of Mirrors for Estradasphere...no lyrics and more serious sounding than MB or most of their other works IMO.

Thanks, well, I'm generally not into the happier stuff and I've listened to half a dozen Samla Mammas Manna and I don't like it very much, so I guess I won't take a look at what you recommended in your first clause any soon - I'll have a listen at Palace of Mirrors; right now I'm listening to Univers Zero's Uzed, and so far I really like it! It's gentle, moody and imminent - if that latter word is used properly here -, the only thing I can remark, however, is the lack of vocals, which is a pity I think, but nevertheless worth buying, I think.

Cool, but I'm starting to wonder if having Yoshida as a member is a legal requirement for Japanese avant-prog bands. How many bands is he in these days?

Ruins alone & Sax Ruins; Koenjihyakkei; Korekyojin; Daimonji; Zeni Geva; Sekkutsu; he's also involved in Acid Mothers Gong...

And I'm only talking about the bands/projects which have toured or released anything recently, in 2010.

Oh, about him, is any of his sideprojects quite like Koenjihyakkei? I listened a bit of Ruins but that - what I listened to at least - couldn't reach the same level as Koenjihyakkei did, IMO, so which albums would you say are the most alike with Koenjihyakkei?

This page (Yoshida's site) gives a good starting point, though it is missing at least one band (The World Heritage):

You might like Ruins Symphonica (the basic duo plus keyboards & two female vocalists) - the solitary album to date includes some of Ruins' best compositions given a kind of symph prog makeover. One of the amazing things about Yoshida is that his projects really do have quite distinct styles and identities, although if you like one you'll probably get into the others sooner or later.

Wow, what a busy guy Confused. My first Koenjihyakkei album arrived in the mail yesterday, now I'm somewhat concerned I might like it too much, might make me bankrupt. XD

Angherr Shisspa has arrived about a week ago - after 3,5 weeks of waitingOuch - and I've been listening to it about twelve times now. Now, I'm sure I don't have to tell you that I love the album, so I'm just going to pop the question to youEmbarrassed:             I defenitely want to buy another Koenjihyakkei album, however, which one am I to choose: I want the one with the most maniac female vocals. Now, I've heard the mp3 stream song from Nivraym on PA and those vocals defenitely sounded prommising, so should I go with Nivraym? or are the vocals more maniac on other albums?

Nivrayam's probably the best album to go for next if you're into the vocal side of the band; I also think that Koenjihyakkei have improved consistently from album to album, although everything so far has been excellent. The remastered version of Nivrayam also has some overdubs from the Angherr Shisspa line up.
