I still have to review some jewel like Tako's debut and Besonacko by Leb i Sol.

This musical scene is very interesting and I hope people will be more involved in this "quest" for new prog horizons.

"Beskonacno" (Infinity) by Leb i Sol is very interesting album, unfortunately neglected by listeners. They lost keyboard player but still as a trio remained very powerful.

Although this thread is titled "exYugoslavian/East European prog", it has been largely occupied by exYugo fans Wink

Now, let's justify a bit its title. Here is about OMEGA, classic Hungarian prog rock. I have recently posted several album reviews and I would recommend these titles (original Hungarian releases only, English versions usually differ):

- 10 000 Lepes (classic psyche/hard rock, containing the best known ballad Girl With Pearls in her hair)
- Ejszakai Orszagut (another excellent psyche/heavy album)
- Nem tudom a neved (the title track is now a classic prog song)
- Csillagok utjan (space prog a la Floyd and little symphonic touches, excellent)

Early period was influenced by psychedelic British beat and heavy rock like Uriah Heep.
Later period (mid-seventies and beyond) sounds like Floyd/Eloy space rock.
More recent early 1990s period, after listening two albums, seems to be negligable and weak.
My two Omega cents...Tongue

^ How early Omega could be influenced by Uriah Heep, if Omega exists from 1962 and UH - since 1970?

You are right. Embarrassed "Influenced" is not a proper word. What I wanted to say that these albums (1969-72) has some similarities with the style of Uriah Heep. Who influenced who is always debatable.
Thanks for mentioning.

By the way, Seyo, I've read your recent review on Omega's "Egy Életre Szól" 1998 album. 1 star - isn't it too much (I mean too low Smile)? I think it is a big improvement in comparison to some 80's albums, particularly Omega 11 and Omega 12 were really awful.
Though it's a matter of taste.

Ha, I haven't heard 11 and 12, but if they are so awful i will not do it for sure! Maybe I was too harsh with Egy, but since I gave Trance and Dance 2 stars I could not be much more forgiving because I was really bored to death.... Yes, it's often about the taste and it is relative...

Yes, 11 and 12 are absolutely awful - typical new wave sounds and mostly forgettable songs. Though "Fekete pillango" from Omega 12 is an exception and it sounded nice in 1994 concert (with the help of Klaus Meine).
Though it will be untrue to say that Omega were "sold out" in the 80s. All these electronics were the subject of band's musicians interest then. You can read about it in 1985 interview with Janos Kobor: go to http://gammapolis.de/, click "English" then "Texts" and then - ""The demonic vocalist", Interview with János Kóbor, Katalin Magyar, 1985"
Omega 10 and Omega 13 from that electronic era are much better, at least they contain memorable songs.

I had the same impression with "Trance and Dance" after first listening. But one of my friends told me: "Listen to the album several times and you will see, it's a mature work and not too bad at all". Now I agree with him.

It was long time ago I listened to Az Arc (10th) and I did not like it. Was very dissapointed about synths and drum machine novelties back then. Aftre that I never listened later albums until recently I gave a spin or two to the two above mentioned. Trance has a few nice moments, but nothing more than that.

These are my first two "former YU" scene's reviews:

Kad bi' bio bijelo dugme

by BIJELO DUGME

5%20stars MY REVIEW IS PRODUCED USING THIS RELEASE: Croatia Records CD 5359647

RATING: 10 with laude/10

MUSICAL GENRE: Heavy Prog/ Blues Rock/ Rock'n'Roll

INTRO: I had never listen Bijelo Dugme and former Yugoslavian music by chance not until I went one Sunday to eat in Slovenia. At freeshop I found the CD live Turneja by Bijelo Dugme (nothing of special). Later in Nova Gorica I found a CD of Pro-Arte (Good band that I discovered to be linked to Indexi) and in a new trip to Nova Goriza I found another CD of Pro-Arte and this great CD! Strange but... Strange Goran Bregovic (yugoslavian Blackmore!) have great connections with Friuli Venezia Giulia because Is a presence almost fixed at Folkest Festival But strangely, I had not ever heard!

THIS RELEASE: Slavic languages are extreme musical languages. So is simply to use this language for musical dreams! But this CD is a perfect version of a perfect music! Believe me, I was almost never been so impressed by a band! Ka Bi' Bio Bijelo Dugme was recorded in RTV ljubljana studios between 22 and 23 October of 1974 with a 16-tracks stereo recorder recording after the incredible success of their BOOM Festival performance in Tivoli (Ljubljana) (P.s.: April 5th 2008 Bijelo Dugme return in Tivoli, ljubljana for a concert). This former Yugoslavian musical institution debut album is still today fresh and magical. For Progsters sounding like a Heavy Prog album but in truth is a great Purpleian album. This because Bregovic plays soli in Blackmore style and in general is an album with Heavy sound created with twin keyboards/ guitars and powerful production in Purple style! But Kad Bi' Bio Bijelo Dugme is also a great 70's album because is a typical 70's album and not because is a copy of another band or musical scene!

THE SONGS: Kad Bi Bijelo Dugme is the song more near Purple. Interesting intro with birds and sheeps (!!!) and Il Rovescio Della Medaglia guitar first rhythmic solo after a very Heavy but athmospheric Hammond second intro is then developed into a vigorous Heavy Prog with Blackmoreian guitar soli and great Moog/ Hammond melody. Blues Za Moju Bivsu Dragu is a typical Delta Blues with great vocal parts (helped with a great musical language... magical language). Ne Spavaj Mala Moja Muzika Dok Svira is a typical Rock'n'Roll extremely furious and extremely Proto Punk in certain musical figures(!!!) when also Sve Cu Da Ti Dam Samo Da Zaigram is a good Rock'n'Roll but more Proggish in rhythm and construction. Selma (with Vlado Dijak lyrics) is an emotional dramatic ballad in Procol Harum/ Dik Dik style! Selma present a great Hammond and a great vocal parts (Zeljko Bebek is a great singer in Gillan/ Farlowe style). The last song Patim Evo Deset Dana present an energic rhythm produced with savage force and a great electric piano melody. But Goran Bregovic with his Les Paul manages to establish a long solo almost equal to those of Blackmore!

CONCLUSIONS: Former Yugoslavia was the more occidental country of East Europe and Bijelo Dugme is a great band not only for a former Yugoslavian musical scene! Certainly Purple and Procol Harum are the bands that for Bijelo Dugme had to be copied but this fact in this case produced a great music, also extreme personal. In fact the Moog in Kad Bi' Bio Bijelo Dugme is the original element in a Purplish style song and this is also a magical insertion. So, in my opinion, Bijelo Dugme (as other bands of former Yugoslavia) were not forced to copy (Because the discs of foreign bands were printed by Yugoton in licensed simultaneously to the original) but Bijelo Dugme use a Purple or Procol Harum musicalsyle base to produce truly original songs. Certainly not all of the songs are Prog but in definitive Kad Bi' Bio Bijelo Dugme is a great manifesto of 70's music.

Izlog jeftinih slatkisa

by BULDOZER

3%20stars MY REVIEW IS PRODUCED USING THIS RELEASE: BAB RR CD B06044

RATING: 6,5/10

MUSICAL GENRE: various

INTRO: This Izlog Jeftinih Slatkisa by Buldozer is my first Prog album from Slovenian band. And surprise is a good CD from a mad band. I do not know the Slovenian, much less musical language other Slavishes languages. But Slovenia (for what I was able to verify) is a magnificent nation (speaking of the landscape). So when Andrea Cortese said me: 'In the discs shop you have found Buldozer' I have answer: 'Yes, but Buldozer had not inspired me' unfortunately I was in the middle of an universal deluge. Since it was late and I had to go all'ipermercato I thought: 'It is up to them to see that I find them?' I found another Buldozer CD... What luck!

THIS RELEASE: This release is a Slovenian BAB release. But the year of this Re release is not written in the package or CD... In any case this is not a problem. The music are extreme various as a genre, In fact the song #1 is a Boogie-Woogie, #2 is a Slow Beat and the other songs are respectively: Punk, Psychedelic, Evergreen, New Wave, Waltz, Pop Swing, Polka and Disco- Reggae!!! In any case is a good technical music. Sin not understand the lyrics because I amuse more to listen to this CD.

THE SONGS: What can I say in this chapter of the review? That the music, indipendently from the base musical genre is extreme technical. Higijena that is Punk is too technical to be a true Punk and Okruni Bogovi Istoka is, in real, a post Psychedelic quasi Punk song(!). Polka is Folk as musical genre in Slovenia but Slovinjak Punk is a great Polka Rock. And it is better that I stop here, not to exaggerate. All musicians of the band have to sell technique. And this, united to a superior production helped many the final result.

CONCLUSIONS: Mad CD but for fine progsters. You can also be demanding because here is really beautiful music, technical and convincing. Yey Izlog Jeftinih Slatkisa is not a masterpiece. Is only a superior to the media release. But very good!

I thought you had bought Leb i Sol 1 and 2 (the studio albums). Instead you bought the two compilations.

Their debut album is only represented by two tracks while Leb i Sol 2, Rucni Rad, Besonacko and Sledovanje are all available in the cds.

You can post review on about each album in order to spread Leb i Sol across the world!
