Well, whaddyaknow? I've been listening to their albums a while now, focussing on 'The Crane Wife' and all the while I was wonderng why it seemed so very familiar, and finally it clicked:
To me it sounds a LOT like Al Stewart's 'Year of the Cat'. It's just such a long time ago I heard that album. The singing and instrumentation sound almost identical, just the compositions are different, although the atmosphere is so similar, it's almost disturbing.

I fell in love with the new Decemberists album the moment I heard it, and it's in the running for Album of the Year for me. I've recommended it to several people, and all (except one) have loved it. One such person first saw them on Jay Leno (? I think) and was turned off by their "dorkiness", but I encouraged him to give the album a try, and based on the musical work alone, he has changed his mind. The one person who didn't like them has just heard a single song, but his criticism had to do with how derivative they are - he had heard much of the same thing on old Renaissance LPs and the like...
I think that the tremendous hype this album is receiving is both a positive boon, yet it might result in its undoing. If you're expecting something really new and original, you're not going to find it in this album, good as it is. My friend who didn't like them almost resented the fact that this band is getting such accolades, yet is not doing anything that hasn't been done before. It's not truly "progressive" in the sense of offering really complex or original musical ideas, but that's not really the point. To me, the triumph of this album is its ability to maintain an extended song-suite with a breadth of musical flavors, and never have it get boring.
That's the main thing I like - all the songs are good and stand on their own, but the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. I still haven't even figured out what the concept is about, and I don't really care (it might even spoil it for me, as it seems a bit corny at first glance). I just think this is the first Decemberists album (and one of the few contemporary albums in the "mainstream" world) that really has top notch melodies yet carries its "rock opera" banner well. The Crane Wife, for example, sounded good to me at first, but after the 3rd or 4th listen I felt that underneath all the icing, the cake itself was kinda stale. Maybe that friend of yours lacked experience. I've already said this a couple of times on other occasions ... I think that this kind of innovation he's looking for is not the ultimate achievement for a musician. Sometimes it happens, sometimes not ... but it can't happen always. Music has certain rules, which are not simply dogmas ... some frequency intervals are harmonic, some are dissonant, it's not open for debate or re-definition. Musicians are bound to use these intervals that others used before ... they can try to use totally unusual intervals, but that will make the music more dissonant which is not always the intention. This is very difficult to explain, but I hope that most musicians will know what I mean. In the end I like an album if I find it interesting, well done and compatible with my "mind set". If it also happens to sound innovative to me - that certainly adds to the experience, but it's not a must for me. Not in prog, and not elsewhere. Edited by Mr ProgFreak - June 15 2009 at 09:41 |

Drat! I had been thinking about, in my coming reviews of "Castaways and Cutouts", drawing the Al Stewart comparison, but not so much for the music as for their common fascination with historical events of a personal nature.
I like the Decemberists' last 3 albums (have not heard the Tain) , especially the blend of styles from lite pop to brooding prog. As someone mentioned, JT wasn't always prog folk, and Strawbs had as much or more pure folk or folk rock as prog even on their most progressive albums. I think it's great that prog is cool again, even if only for a select few bands

Here's a good criteria for whether they should be here or not. Do the fans of this site benefit from being introduced here? I hadn't listened to them before seeing the accolades here. I checked them out and I like them quite a bit. I agree that they're not Gentle Giant. But it seems like they are a band that appeals to prog fans, regardless of what definitions of prog you apply. Since I see that as the primary function of the site (helping prog fans find new music that they'll enjoy) given the almost overwhelming appreciation of the band, I say they belong here.

I was mildly interested in this band after seeing them appear here and looking at a few reviews. But after this lengthy and rambling thread, I'm REALLY interested to see what all the fuss (pro and con) is about. So the latest is a good place to start then? |
