To those who say they listened to something once and decided they didn't like it, I should point out that when I were a lad the definition of prog music was something that took several listens to appreciate. If you liked it the first time then it probably had no depth and you'd be bored with it after a few plays.

TRINITY - PRECIOUS SECONDS

I bought this album without hearing anything off it first. (Bad mistake, I know, but I have got away with it in the past, numerous times - this time I was caught!)
The blurb I read about it described it as - sounding something like Pendragon and later Pink Floyd, but with enough individuality to make it different, this is a superb album! God, was that statement wrong! I love both of the above bands, so thought this would be interesting and right up my street. In fact, it didn't even reach my country, never mind find my street! The music started off a little like Pendragon, true, like a very inferior rip off from the start of 'The Window Of Life', but it didn't sound promising, in fact it sounded quite amateurish, but then, oh god, then, in came the vocals! I am sorry, and I don't wish to offend anyone from the band, or their friends and relatives, but let's just say the singer sounded like he should be down the pub on a karaoke machine, trying to sing a straight rock song. His voice just didn't fit the music at all. And, on the third track I think it was, he was hopelessly out of tune throughout the chorus, trying to reach too high and falling on his face. Not one song inspired me, even though I kept thinking, 'well, the next track might be better'. I have played the cd a few times since, just to make sure it isn't a 'grower', and sadly, it isn't. I will keep it, though,  as it makes all the other cd's I am not too fond of sound much better than they are!
Sorry, but that is the skeleton in my cupboard, where prog is concerned, anyway! Cry

I agree that Carl Palmer's PM were a disapointment, but I like Love Beach.

I haven't really had a lot of bad purchases, but these two were horrible:

  • Metallica - St. Anger (I like Metallica, but this is their worst album ever)
  • Cradle of Filth - Live Bait for the Dead (bought blindly (never do that!) and I don't like black metal, I like CoF even less and I like CoF live not at all!!!)

From stuff Ive bought in the last year or so, the most disappointing was certainly Steve Howe's "Turbulence". Id bought a batch of solo albums from bands I liked, incl. Hackett, Trower & Bruce - which were mostly pretty good - but Howe's effort was - well, I suppose, "unbalanced" must be the word, in the sense that without the band, his stuff didnt work. Whereas Trower & Bruce both produced very decent work, and Hackett, acceptable stuff. You can never tell from a strong band who can transfer well to solo work, and who cant. Mysteriously spooky; and spookily mysterious.

I listened to H To He Who Am The Only One by VDGG and wasn't impressed. With all the hype I though I would have liked it more, but I guess not...

Pink Floyd's Ummagumma, Camel the Snowgoose have to be the worst prog rock purchases I've had so far.

I orginally was disappointed that album and VDGG in general but then they really grew on me. IMHO they're very different from other Symphonic prog acts and should be aproached differently, actually I think they should be in a different sub genre IMHO.

I've never bought a bad album. Haven't you all heard of extensive research before purchase?

Wait, well I guess I bought Yes, Union. But it has a few good ones, it was only 5 bucks.

It's the same guy. Great minds think alike.

Why is Robert Fripp wearing a Noel Coward-style smoking jacket and dark glasses indoors? Does that photograph serve any purpose?

Camel - I can see your house from here

I just don't get this album. It has too much... "Caravan" in it.

You've just had a heavy session of electroshock therapy, and you're more relaxed than you've been in weeks.

Well, yes, youre quite right, on a severely practical level.Approve

But for me, personally, (and I freely admit that although I "know" a couple of the more obvious bands well, and even though I was around during the 70s, most prog bands are uncharted territory), a large part of the fun is putting on a CD & having little or no idea what to expect, beyond what a few subjective (and, sincerely, helpful ; Clap ) reviews here & a 30 second sample of the odd track from amazon can suggest.

I dont think Id want to have heard the whole thing before buying; so to that extent, its my own fault if I buy a turkey Ouch . But the romantic gambler in me wont let me calculate to the nth degree & 6 places of decimals my chances of liking a CD before taking the plunge  Ying Yang .  Wink  It would be like watching a football match on tv, already knowing the score......

THE WORST ALBUM I BOUGHT WAS AC/DC's "FLY ON THE WALL" Dead
IT WAS HORRIBLE !!!!
I DON' T KNOW WHY I BOUGHT IT. THEN I REPLACED IT WITH A JOE SATRIANI CD (WHICH WAS MORE BETTER THAN AC/DC)

I must admit that Calling All Stations by Genesis was a bitter disappointment to me.

Several crap pop compilations that I bought 7-8 years ago. (Don't ask me why!!)

As for now lately, I haven't bought any "bad" albums yet, though some of them are just good.
