I like some Roxy Music but can't stand Bryan Ferry's voice (or his obnoxious politics, either!). Avalon is brilliant, though.

Talking Heads do nothing for me. They're very probably very gifted, but I don't like the music they make.

Avalon is probably among top 10 most atmospherocly beautifull albums made.

I'd say neither, even though both have their moments.

I love "Fear of Music" and like "More Songs About Buildings and Food" but that just doesn't compare with the entire Roxy catalog which are all among my fave albums Wink

Had to pick the Both option because both groups have outstanding characteristics.

Roxy Music: I'm not familiar with Bryan Ferry's politics, but I have always enjoyed his singing and the evolution of the groups sound which peaked with "Avalon". Really like Manzanera's and Mackay's contributions on guitar and sax , respectively, as well.

Talking Heads: Enjoyed hearing this group evolve as well, peaking with "Remain in Light". Songs like "I Zimbra" and the whole "Remain in Light" album.....what can one say? At the time no one else was doing anything like them.

Both groups had the benefit of truly unique singers which helped each group to create and develop their own style.

And, of course, Eno played a part in the early Roxy Music and classic Talking Heads era.
Making the useless useful 24/7.

Chose Roxy because the first 4 or 5 are unique and always sounded great to me....but The Heads did some fine albums also.

Definitely in the both category.   My interest in Roxy started with Viva, but came a few short years after it was out.  Talking Heads with Remain when it was new, so probably about the same time.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I love it's opening track, among my favorites from theirs.

Funny that TH were clearly influenced by RM , in fact Roxy is one of the most influential bands of all time, the breeding ground for a vast variety of genres (glam, punk, electronica, art rock, new wave, romantic and yes....prog).
I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.
