Yeah, this sounds nice. I like the original one, but there was always something that put me off. I guess it was so much narration during the songs, and the way they were arranged. And the fact that lot's of musical passages were used twice without major change. I wonder how this new version will be arranged.

Listening to the album right now, what are the odds!! I always thought the album was worthy of a studio version.

^ Nice...Right on time Raccoon. I remember listening to the live version on cassette way back when, riding around early in the AM with a guy who delivered newspapers. We listened to it over and over on the route, good memory!

Tried to place an order but it kept losing the connection so gave up in the end.

I've had the studio version for years.
Of course mine doesn't have this extra 20 mins, but he could have put some of that in originally. It is a very short album. Edited by Snow Dog - October 13 2012 at 06:20 |

The only "other" version I know of is the 1999 Return To... album with Ozzy Osbourne, Justin Haywood and Bonnie Tyler, and that's not a studio re-recording of the original live album. What is the version you have Ian?

From Rick's Blog (Grumpy Old Rick's Ramblings):
So there you have it from the horse's mouth - a completely brand new studio recording with new-bits.
I've ordered my copy without site connection problems. |

Well, ELP did their version of Pictures at an Ex. in the studio and while I think it had an excellent sound stage, I was disappointed that they didn't expand it a bit with more solo's and the Blues jam.
As for Wakeman, I'll be interested to see how close to the original the performance energy is. Played live, like Pictures at an Ex., these works are almost always more fun for me to listen to. So out of curiosity, who else has done an album of material only as a live release and you think should take a studio production approach to? |

There was a studio version on a lot of greatest hits, around 30 minutes long, no narration. It's pretty good. I always loved the original live CD. Very good. There's an alternate live one too.
I liked the story telling part of the album too. I thought the narrator was terrific. He was a famous actor in the 60s and died young, so he won't be on this new one. |

We already discussed this if you read the thread, and David Hemmings didn't die so very young.

The original always bothered me a bit, so I guess this is a wonderful oppurtunity to get the Journey

For me to be interested in this, I would want an upfront promise of vintage instruments and recording equipment. There is something about Rick Wakeman playing digital synthesizers and recorded in digital crispness that loses all of the majesty and mystery of his music.
