Both are good singers but I've seen both live and they're the 2 biggest poseurs I've ever seen. Sammy Hagar spent most of the gig having a "guitar battle" with his other guitarist (which he of course won) and Dave Lee Roth did more posing to the (admittedly stunning) women in the front row than singing. Unfortunately neither are prog.
"Montrose" is a great album tho' (get on your Bad Motor Scooter and ride!).

I would say Hagar is the technically better singer, but Roth is alot more 'talented' I like all the Van Halen albums with Roth singing, but there are only a few VH tracks with Hagar at the helm that I can tolerate.
Roth is more humerous and better showman. Van Halens music was also more original and varied with him. It seemed to fall into American rock cliche when Hagar took over. IMO.

Roth is so funny, and indeed a great show man. He made some great tunes solo. I voted for him.
Still Hagar is a much better lyricist. I guess when he joined Van Halen, the band lost a showman and won a good singer and a lot of depth.

Roth.I saw them live when they were touring for their first album and Van Halen II.Roth was a good frontman, great showmanship.I was never a huge Hagar fan and saw them live on the 5150 tour and Hagar just bored me.

This really doesn't belong on this site.
Plus the only person I can imagine picking Hagar is a Bud-drunk, Bush-votin' redneck with a serious head injury.
Roth rules.

With VH, Roth of course, but his solo career was really lame, even more lame than Hagar's

Roth unfortuneatly has one of those voices that I absolutely detest and 'California Girls'.....? What the f**k was he trying to achieve when he sang that? It's the biggest balls up of a cover song ever!!!!!!!!
Hagar is in a far higher league and Van Halen released their best albums with him in the band!

Diamond is a 100% pure conceited asshole (made from concentrated pure dickhead fruits and with added pulp) but he is the Van Halen frontman.
Hagar pales in comparison. That debut album is flawless. an all-time classic: every track is a gem.

I don't really like Van Halen at all, but Roth is a lot cooler than Sammy Hagar. God I hate Sammy Hagar.
