Just found you but long time prog lover

I've been appreciating prog archives for my music research for quite a few years but only now decided to actually explore the community here.   

I would call myself a music FIEND. I've been one since early childhood and yes... I am a woman. I say that because I very rarely find a kindred female of the species who is really into music the way I am. Almost always it is men I've related to on this topic. 

I am very, very eclectic in my music tastes but prog is very close to my heart and really has been since... um... lets see... I think I can track my strong love of it to my 16th year of life, which was 1984. I was really into New Wave back then and had purchased tickets to see Berlin as an opening band for Yes on their 90125 tour.  I took along my sister who was 9 years senior to me and we trekked to McNichols arena in Denver, CO only to find that Berlin had cancelled and Loony Tunz cartoons had taken their place. Really, at the time all I knew of Yes (so I thought) was "Owner of a Lonely Heart". I was really bummed about Berlin not showing but my sister reassured me and said, "You'll really love Yes. You've heard a lot of their music, but you just don't know it yet. You'll see." 

And man..... That concert was the most outstanding concert I have ever seen in my life, and by now I've been to a lot of concerts. It was just... heavenly. And yes, the whole time I was going, "Oh.. I know this one!"  I went right out and got the 8 track... yes it was what my car had in it at that time... of Fragile. I was totally blown away and have been a lover of prog ever since.

As far as music in general.. I am constantly, and I mean constantly, on the search for new and inspiring music and bands. I tend to get into a certain genre big time for a period of time, then get burned out on it and hunt for something else. 

Here is a funny story about that: 

I've always been a lover of 80s New Wave since that was the music of my teen years and so  in the mid 90s I was on a yahoo group for 80s music. Around that time I would periodically hear or see some mention of "Goth/Industrial" music. I was very intrigued and so I started asking everyone I knew what Goth-Industrial music was but no one could really tell me. At that time it was hard to discover new bands and genres online and we only had dial-up internet. A great guy on the yahoo group knew some about it and put together a mix tape for me of some samples of things he was guessing I would like. 

A whole new world opened up to me at that point and I was in love! I found out about bands like "Dead Can Dance", "Switchblade Symphony", "Bauhaus", "Cocteau Twins", and many others. I went out and got some CDs of my favs then, but wanted more.  

I found at that time that the only real way to get to know that kind of music was to go out to where they were playing it and so we found out about this Goth club in Detroit, MI (where we lived at the time) that had a "Deep Dark Retro" night. So started the era of discovery where we would go there every week, me armed with pad and pen. Every time I would hear some new song that sparked my interest, I would run up to the DJ booth and have him write the name of the song and band down for me. Then I would go home and to CD stores and find more by that band. We discovered our fierce love of "The Cruxshadows" this way when we first heard "Marilyn My Bitterness" and were walking on air!  

It was pretty funny though because some DJs don't have the best handwriting I guess and at one point I was found in the CD store hunting for albums by "Wumpslut", which is actually "Wumpscut". Oh gee..  So anyway we were really sucked into the Goth club and music scene for the next 5 years and then moved to The Land of the Blue Jeans and Lack of Culture otherwise known as the Kitsap Peninsula in Washington. So passes an era. 

Nowadays I am down and disabled with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia and really the discovery of music via the internet is  my life line. I literally spend hours and hours every week and most days playing with my music files, ipod etc.  and discovering music online. 

When it comes to prog, my new thrilling discoveries of the last year have been: 

Glass Hammer, Renaissance, Old Genesis, Unitopia, Ayreon, Par Lindh Project, Phideaux, more Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, and of course... YES. 

I found this forum tonight while googling info about the new album by the Celtic Christian prog band, Iona. I also then discovered a new band also... yeah!  Mostly Autumn.  

Hope to find some friends and kindred spirits here.
