I've been listening to Acquiring The Taste by Gentle Giant recently.
What a great and truly "progressive " album, I love it!

Indeed!  A very dark affair from
"The Boys In The Band" but they always stressed in interviews that they
had a lot of laughs making it. The only songs which let it down are the
throwaway title track and the slightly cheesey "Wreck". The rest of it
is top notch stuff, and shows the band taking a clear step forward
towards their "classic" sound. "The Moon Is Down" is one of their most
unfairly underrated songs. No one EVER talks about it, but the 2nd
keyboard dominated half is BEAUTIFUL and seems to change mood/texture a
hundred times. Gorgeous album.

Its the sort of album that requires more and more listens,I'm more familiar with their more "popular" stuff, but this album is a little gem!

Great Album
Edge of Twilight, The House The Street The Room, and Wreck (sry TP) are all awesome (forgot the first one, which i cant spell)

I love that keyboard beginning of the album, get's me into it right away.
As an aside, I love the whole progression of Gentle Giant. They start
off with semi-prog/semi-RnB, quickly to move on to artistic prog rock,
to finish it off with medieval style of Power&Glory. You can hear
them getting better and better, delivering more stunning albums as they
progress! And I love each phase!

No idea why you find "Wreck" cheesy". The idea of a shanty interrupted by recorders and strings in the middle is excellent!

Perhaps my favorite GG album! (out of the ones I've heard) "Pantagruel's Nativity" is brilliant!

I occasionally like some GG songs, but I can't seem to get the hang of it.
I'm listening their debut right now, but while it's not bad, it's not great either.
Wanted to write a review on an album I didn't like very much anyway, so I'll try to make an objective one, probably three stars, maybe two

This is my favourite Gentle Giant album, and I love all the tracks on it, and the title track is GREAT!
This is one of the best cd's I ever heard. I wish that more people would hear hit, but would they appreciate it? GG is an acquired taste indeed.
I wish more bands would have chosen the uncompromising route Gentle Giant took. Not an easy route but very, very rewarding.

While on the topic of The Taste - what was the spin-off band's name when Rory Gallagher went solo? And how can I acquire The Taste album on CD, the album that set the scene for Skid Row (the original, and Irish band), Thin Lizzy and even U2?

The Taste spin off band was called Stud, I believe, and I think they had members from bands like Blossom Toes too. Never heard the record, but I've seen the Deram vinyl at high prices...
The first Taste album has been on CD for a long time, but is quite old and the sound left something to be desired, with a lot of tape hiss.

Thanks for that. I remember one stand out track by Stud (if not their name!!), which not Taste-like - I'm sure I had a copy a long time ago, time to check with friends if I lent it out and forgot it.
