Hi,
I'd like to buy a keytar, because IT'S AWESOME and I started visiting local jam sessions and it turned out to be quite boring to have a monophonic synth while the others are soloing ![]() And I want to perform naked on stage. Thanks for potential answers. |

DIE YOU EVIL WINGED SPAWN OF SATAN!
I'm assuming this isn't real based on: #1-You talking about a keytar on a prog rock website (an obvious 80's pop reference), #2 you seem to be acting like playing a keytar isn't just playing keyboard, it's the same instrument (that monophonic comment was confusing, theres non monophonic keyboards, you don't have to buy a keytar), and #3 you wish to perform naked on stage. I don't think we can help you here. Not to mention that the severe lack of keytars in production shouldn't allow for much loss of direction in buying one. Edited by himtroy - June 23 2011 at 16:54 |

I still never saw the point of this useless instrument. Any one you get will be digital, meaning the exact same tones would be available on a real keyboard. On a real keyboard you have range and an increased ability to use both hands. What the hell is the purpose of the keytar other than for looks? I'm still saying this is a joke (the fact that prog rock musicians have touched the instrument is irrelevant to my point)

Fred Frith did some cool stuff on a Casio back in the '80's on Cheap At Half The Price. If you have the money, I'd get a sequencer. I have a Yamaha QY100. It's very portable and runs on batteries as standard.

Herbie Hancock has used one.
Anyway, it can be boring sitting behind a wall of synths. It's solo time motherf**kers! http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AXSynth/ http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AX09WT/ |

No one is going to take you seriously if you play a keytar. If that doesn't bother you, you can pay something like 500 bucks on ebay for one or buy a midi controller shaped like a keytar that's a little cheaper. And sorry, but if you play naked, there won't be an audience left.

It's honestly just saying "yeah I'm playing keyboard but I want to come out front with the guitarist". Limiting your abilities for superficialities...the exact opposite of a real musician. What ever happened to caring about music and adding in show only when it doesn't sacrifice quality? Maybe I actually care about music too much, but I'd rather see damn well performed pieces than a bunch of jackasses jumping around for "stage" effect.

Well thanks for the advice, guess I'll stick to accordion powersliding for a while.
![]() ... And one more question about midi controllers (once again, I'm a total noob when it comes to technology) - If I use a monophonic synth as a source, can I play chords on the controller keyboard? Edited by AbrahamSapien - August 04 2011 at 14:03 |

No. The synth doesn't have the hardware to make the sound. Depending on the not priority it might sound the higher or lower of the chord played, but not more than one note.

Chick Corea used to play keytars ( a yamaha one if I remember right ). I am not an any sort of fan of keytars but I think it looks cool with him. Also reflects that type of solo better to the audience.

It depends if you want to spend the excessive amount of money to obtain one just to have it.
If you have the money to waste then keytars are the sh*t!
But if you're thinking it's going to pay itself off think again. |

as well as many jazz-fusion synth players (George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, to name a few) Rick Wakeman played keytar with Yes, as seen in 1979 Philadelphia concert p.s instead of keytar synth i'd prefer to have keytar-style midi keyboard connected to synth module or workstation , to have better synth programming options

Edgar Winter invented the thing! Here he is with the fabulous ARP 2600!! I always liked the way he wielded the thing onstage!
