Mike Portnoy has just announced he's leaving Dream Theater (I know, what a shock)

So to commemorate his departure (or death as I like to call it), lets all think of suitable replacements...

RULES: Drummer has to be reasonably good, has a similar playing style to Mike, and has to be alive.

Althogh, fantasy is included, so if you want to name either an odd drummer or a dead one, it doesen't matter, you might as well, lak

i'll start it off, Richard Christie, mainly because he's a God at drumming and has a similar metal and musical approach to music.

Chris Pennie, cause he's a technical wizard.

Hellhammer & Frost, but thats mainly for the speed.

Steve Ashiem, again for the speed and the technical abillity.

Zoltan Csorz, cause he was in The Flower Kings, thats good enough.

Jimmy Chamberlin, cause he has an odd jazz influence.

Mike Mangini, he does have the fastest hands in the world.

Nike D'Virgillio, cause it's Nick D'Virgillio

Anyone that has ever drummed for Iced Earth

Lars Ulrich, cause it would be a laugh to see him attempt to play some of Mikes parts

And, I'll try to think of more...

What about Dave Grohl !     Or maybe I'll nominate good old Ringo. He's 70 now, but I'm sure he'll practice a bit, and his vocals would be interesting. ( ha ha )

Cry

Fortunately there is no way that Harrison be interested in a band like DT.

It would be very interesting if a jazz-influenced fusion drummer was MP's replacement. In the style of Bruford and such. Dave Weckl maybe, or Gary Novak. Someone mentioned Christian Vander in the other thread. Now that would be spiffy.

nick d'virgilio and virgil donati are the first names that came to my mind actually

johan langell would also be an interesting replacement, but since he left PoS to spend more time with his family, he would possible not be interested.

How about Terry Bozzio? He might have an even bigger drum set ... Wink

Surprised it took so long for someone to mention Terry Bozzio. He's the obvious drummer of choice for me. Is he still in KoRn though?

I'm not so much into prog-metal but among the ones I know Mike Mangini, Virgil Donati and Bozzio seem to fit.

Nick D'Virgilio is too subtle for DT's music.

I'd love them to take a drummer who gives them a more subtle and proggy style but I very much doubt that this will be the case, they will probably go full metal.

I guess drummers are already queuing to present themselves for an audition , mailing them demo tapes and chasing DT's agent like madmen trying to bribe him. God this is a golden job opportunity if you are a drummer !

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Flo Mounier yet.
