Topic: How Too Make the Modern World Like Prog Posted: July 05 2010 at 17:23 |
Easy
21st Century Schizoid Man, the ultimate prog intro.
just search the song title in youtube every heavy metal band was covering it in the 80s and some new covers have emerged recently and that riff is an instant classic whatever you're into
So in the next holidays when the ussual array of THE BEST ROCK ANTHEMS YOU'VE ALREADY BOUGHT CD EVER compilations come out lets hope Schizoid Man is at the back of CD2

Are you trying to make the modern world more schizoid than it already is? Quite frankly, I'd rather it go Moonchild.

The first 3 tracks of Red.The whole album is brilliant of course but the first side translates better into modern music.

Easy: Establish an industry embargo on new music and focus on reissuing classic prog albums.

Yeah, but that would require having actual musicians as contestants.

Great idea. Let's have "Gates of Delirium" on Guitar Hero. That would really do your head in.
Actually "Owner of a Lonely Heart" would be good.

I think there's quite a few out there who are not into prog just because they never heard of it rather than they don't like it. Show a metalhead some prog metal and see him make his way through. Sure, this won't be the case all the time but a fair percentage of them will. I think.

Get rid of the X Factor, replace it with Prog Idol, and get Wakeman to present rather than the two Geordie muppets. Heaven

I think you can already find things like YYZ and Lateralus on there (or certainly one of the other popular computer rock band games).
I have had fun making my nephew play drums on Hotel California getting comments like 'these old songs suck' ![LOL LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)

La Villa Strangiato would be awesome on Rock Band
But to answer the general question: We can't make the modern world love prog, they have to let it into their hearts ![Embarrassed Embarrassed](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif)

It's also the best way to alienate listeners, since the contrasts and assault concept that was used with it, was meant to get people to know the difference between loud music and loud crap! And I'm not sure you got that, if all you want to do is blow out everyone's ear wax, not share the benefits of music, however different it can be!
If you are to take someone down that journey, you should start with Beethoven and slowly brin gup music by every 25 years with a different piece until you reach 1950, then 1960 and then 1965 and then 1970.
In the end, all you are doing is showing music changing and growing and then making some sense of what rock music did and started doing to get some more acceptance as a valuable musical endeavor, which still is not going to get if all you want to do is shake people's ears and ideas off their rocker! It will sound completely out of context and not make any sense whatsoever regardless of the lyrics sounding like Milton, Shakespeare or RWEmerson or some silly idiot lyricist for Metalica!
The only way you can blow out the world and start a fresh is the day that the earth blows out its corona and we're all dead and there is no atmosphere and all you got is a rock in space ... and it all starts all over again somewhere else, or even here after a few million years! Astrophysics says no, but I like to say YES more times! Nous sommer du soleil!

That's actually a pretty good idea ... the problem being that some stuff being played in Roundaboud ... is not easy and ... not sure that too many of us can even try some of that bass stuff!
The problem is that music that is simpler has a basic "logic" that makes it easier to learn and play ... the reason why you get people play some blues is because it is easy ... the reason why nobody plays Pt 1 of Tales from Topographic Oceans, is because you have to be a fudging master musicians and be more intelligent than the next 50 musicians you meet in order to be insane enough to even try it!
Most folks that play music in college, and orchestras, can't even do that!

yeah one of the Guitar Hero games had 3 tracks by Tool (they also had a unique tool-ey background art, because Tool didn't want to sell out for nothing ![LOL LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif) ) and you can get the whole (I think) album of Moving Pictures by Rush. They also actually have 21st Century Schizoid Man on one of the games anyway.
Of course in terms of numbers the prog to pop rock ratio is still depressingly uneven ![Dead Dead](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif)
