Great to see some appreciation for Piirpauke here, I just gave this album and their Metamorphosis live album a couple of spins last week. Gorgeous stuff at their best, definitely.

both Raff and I listened to that earlier today... great stuff Clap

From what I've heard, I think they should be considered for addition, at least in Prog-Related. What's your opinion, Pekka?

I was extremely surprised to see that they're not in the 'archives already. They were a very big name in the Finnish experimental music scene in the 70s, not pure prog no, but I bet it was pretty progressive at the time to combine jazz and world music the way they did. So I say bring 'em on, at least for prog related Smile

So, Piirpauke is a band formed by multi-instrumentalist Sakari Kukko in 1974, combining jazz, traditional Finnish music and world music, adapting traditional songs in their jazzy style and writing original music in the same spirit. The first line-up was all Finnish but later often multi-national as members came and went. It's very difficult to find any info or even decent cover pics of most of their output, but at least their debut Piirpauke is a true classic album of Finnish experimental music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6v4WIh_jNc Here's their best known song, Konevitsan kirkonkellot (The Church Bells of Konevitsa - an old Carelian folk song about the chiming of the Konevitsa monastery bells on lake Ladoga).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piirpauke A pretty uninformative Wikipedia article
http://www.rockadillo.fi/piirpauke A crappy discography and a decent biography

I think they were suggested some time ago, but that didn't lead to anything.

I stand by what I said, not 100 % prog imo, but definitely worthy of being here.

All for. Fits that hopeless (not the music but the name) Indo/raga subgenre, I guess.

I heard them yesterday for the first time, in spite of all the time I lived in Finland, and was extremely impressed. Nowadays many acts blend jazz with world music, but these guys were doing that in the Seventies, and in a country that was still somewhat marginalised on the international music scene. They may not be 100% prog, but so are many other bands and artists included here, and this would definitely be a great addition.

if an artist had to be 100%prog to be included...and also had the agreement of every soul on the forum... we would find our database here to be extremely limited hahhah

Are we making "Indo/Raga" a de facto "world prog" now?  Where would Piirpauke be placed?

Sure, both are great and if you ask me i would suggest them for prog folk rather than indo/raga.

some teams are a bit more active than others.... I'll drop a PM or two.. see if we can ring any interest in evaluating it.
