Really tragic news indeed, will play Trespass tonight in tribute to him. His work on that album was really good. R.I.P. John!

Truly a shame, he was a great drummer and "Trespass" is my favorite Gabriel era Genesis album. I really liked his work on the song "Looking For Someone".

Actually, I disagree - while not being devoid of skill, I think that he lacked the subtlety and versatility needed to let the music written (by the band's main composers) flow. His instrumental input was the least important source of sound in that album, but again, like I said, he had some power and talent to him.
All in all, he was part of the album that made Genesis flourish as the kind of prog hero band that it became from the "Nursery cryme" onwards.
Rest in peace, John - thank you for your input in such a cornerstone album as Genesis' "Tresspass".

Yes - that's the reason the band replaced him with Collins at the same time as they were looking for a new guitarist to replace Phillips. They realised the rhythm section needed beefing up. However, this is genuinely sad news, because he did play on one of the finest early prog albums ever made, and, for that, deserves his place in history and our affection. The news story regarding his brother's search was especially sad. RIP. Trespass to be played tonight on the way to the pub.

Read itt today on other site, very sad news, even worst because his brother started a search for him and when found his address, John dies.
Very good drummer, sadly there was a better one for his place.

His drumming works out just fine for me in Trespass.Unlike most people,to me they're not a bad aspect of that album,although I can't offer many compliments to it either.If The Knife unfortunately showed itself much more accurate and natural with Phil,Mayweh helped to build Visions of Angels and Looking For Someone quite dramatic climaxes. And as Anthony Phillips says in the band's 2007 interviews for the new album editions,History remebers John Mayhew as unfittable for the band,but the truth is he was actually the most experienced musician in the group by then.He just happened to be replace by one of the most gifted drummers we have knowledge of.

Unlike his predecessors, John Silver and Chris Stewart, Mayhew found it hard to move on in life after his stint with Genesis.
His subsequent move to Glasgow - where he lived a quite frugal and spartan lifestyle by all accounts, relying on benefit handouts at one stage. He drank heavily and I think this, coupled with his lifestyle, ultimately led to his death.
I find his story very sad indeed.
God bless him.
