Topic: Dependence on God Posted: December 01 2007 at 15:27 |
THIS IS NOT A RELIGION/RELIGIOUS THREAD
I was just wondering how much do you see yourself depending on God (in any way you imagine God) and/or your own self/strengths/abilities. I see many variations in my everyday life and I am interested to see how much emphasis put people in this.
Myself, I feel I depend both on God and on my own abilities. An Ancient Greek rime says 'Syn Athena kai xeira kinei' which means, 'along Athena (one of the Goddesses of Ancient Greeks), you need to move your hands (take your own actions)'
Feel free to drop a line...

I studied in a catholic school, and our football (soccer) coach was a priest.
Once a guy in the team asked the coach: "If we pray will God make us win?"
The coach/priest answered "Yes, he will help us but only if we train hard and play better than the other team"
That is my position, trust in God but also make an effort by yourself.

sort of a fourth option for me
I don't rely on god but I don't rely on myself either. we're equally useless to laplace the cynic.

Yeah, I agree. I believe God requires us to put forth our best efforts and do what we can before he steps in to help us out or do something for us. That's why he gave us brains, arms, legs, abilities, talents, etc- so we can use them.

Nobody needs to go anywhere else. We are all, if we only knew it, already there.

Anyone who expects god to solve their problems will be sorely disappointed.

Since I don't believe in god, it's choice 3 for me. I would, however, depend on a dog if I were blind. (Woody Allen joke alert).

Well - I'm not religious in any way - I believe in my own abilities - but not exclusively - my family, friends and colleagues are also very important ...

Well, it depends, as someone could believe that they are reliant on their abilities that were given to them by God

For a non religious thread, this thread is gonna get pretty religous soon, so I will help keep that from happening by not posting in it again.
I voted #2

The third option, we are all responsible for our own actions and must see them as being just that, our own actions.

I picked choice #2, but just to be clear i mean the Christian God, lol.
(If your not religious you don't have to read this)
As for someone's comment that they will achieve great things if they trust God, that is not nessesarily true. We must fail, suffer, and accept great loss as well because we are human, a fallen being, whether we believe in God's hand in our lives or not. In the end however, reward will come.

1 Chronicles 13:7-9
Then David and all Israel played music before God with all their might, with singing, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on cymbals, and with trumpets.

I agree with all the post, but I highlighted a short section.
This is a Religious thread, if we are talking about God and our trust in him, it's a 100% Religious thread, i don't undesrtand why peope is afraid to accept talking about Religion.
But most important, I don't understand why some atheists or agnostics feel so much pleasure trying to make religious people look as idiots who believe in a fantasy, if they are so sure God doesn't exist, why so much effort in attacking those who believe?
What do we represent that frightens you so much?
Most of us respect all beliefs and disbeliefs, if you join a thread about religion to say that any believer will be disappointed if we trust in God, it's just trying to make religious people feel bad with themselves.
If you don't believe it's OK, I have most of respect for people with a solid position, but I think we deserve the same respect for our belief.
Thanks
Iván
