Too hard to name 9 and 10, I would've had Dream Theater in here before, but my interest in them has waned somewhat.

Pink Floyd Flower Kings Fabio Zuffanti (Finisterre, Aries,La maschera di Cera etc...) Grobschnitt Camel Nemo Focus King Crimson Quella vecchia locanda PFM
If non prog also counts than the Kinks,CCR and ELO would certainly be included, i also realized that i forgot about Santana , maybe your question is too difficult altogether....

First 3 are in that order, 4-7 shifts a lot, but I think this is pretty solid, and 8-10 have no real order. (Weird, there all non prog...)
1: Porcupine Tree 2: Pink Floyd 3: Genesis
4: Radiohead 5: Kevin Gilbert 6: King Crimson 7: Peter Gabriel Solo
8: Sufjan Stevens 9: Death Cab for Cutie 10: Massive Attack

1. Rush
2. Yes
(Those 2 are easy. They have been my two favorite bands forever).
These 8 are the bands that are probably my favorite at this current point in time:
3. The Flower Kings
4. Ayreon
5. Spock's Beard
6. Marillion
7. Saga
8. Porcupine Tree
9. Led Zeppelin
10. The Tangent
These 8 are probably my favorite bands from all-time versus just what I am listening to these days:
3. Led Zeppelin
4. The Beatles
5. Judas Priest
6. Van Halen
7. Def Leppard
8. Metallica
9. The Flower Kings
10. The Who
Of course, I could probably list 50 honorable mention bands/artists. I wonder how these compare to the last time I listed top 10 bands. The well known fact is that these are subject to change on a daily basis.

Genesis
Jethro Tull
Yes
top 3 are all but carved in stone
Kansas
The Moody Blues
IQ
Van der Graaf Generator
Premiata Forneria Marconi
King Crimson

Ok here's the real list: - Magma
- Pat Metheny Group
- Genesis
- Änglagård
- Gentle Giant
- King Crimson
- Jethro Tull
- Peter Gabriel
After that, there's just a huge list of equal bands and composers. A lot of the bands in that puddle of bands are only not on the above list because I don't know enough by them. (Henry Cow, for example: Western Culture blew me away, but that's all I know by them at this point.)

For rock/pop (I exclude the Beatles from any top ten list, they are a given)
1.Iron Maiden
2.Mike Oldfield and Julian Lennon (tied)
3. Pink Floyd
4. Savatage
5. King Crimson
6 .Amorphis
7. Helloween
8. New Order
9. OMD
10.Rush
If I included other genres other than rock/pop the list would look different but I do not feel inclined to do that.
Edit. Reniassanse, how could I ever forget they are tied for # two

I'm disappointed - neither of these players are avant-garde!
