This website calculates an open mind index given your last.fm data using records of tags and playcounts. It's pretty interesting and gives nice graphs if you're interested in that.
For example. here is mine: This means that I am a bit closed minded and only listen to some genres (which I guess is true) and then lists my most popular. Anyone else find this interesting? |

Kind of misleading because I used the computer a lot more for music when I was new to prog, but whatever. I think I'm more open minded than the chart would lead you to believe, but not extremely. To quote Howard Devoto from Magazine: "My mind ain't so open so that anything could crawl in," or something along those lines. The fact that I love post-punk in addition to prog probably says a bit about my music tastes. |

But it was close. But thinking of the scopes of genres like "progressive rock" or "indie", I think I'm a bit more open minded than this thing gives me credit for. |

I'm right about the average I bet most people who listen to popular music (ie the actual "average') would get about a 20 though, so I dont know what they mean by "average" that isn't to say I'm not limiting, most of what I listen to falls within some realm of "rock" |

If you think about it, this is kind of flawed. I mean, somebody could only listen to really popular bands that are from totally different genres, like 50 cent, the beatles, RHCP, linkin park, rammstein, etc. requiring little open-mindedness as compared to somebody who specializes in an unpopular genre, for example avant jazz.

I don't think that someone who specializes in any particular genre could be called open minded. Popular or unpopular ... doesn't matter IMO, the more narrow your bandwidth of acceptable styles is, the more narrow/closed minded you are IMO. And don't you think that Avant Jazz is any better than Rap! |
