Easy. Who and why ? I vote for Adrian Smith, because his style is instantly recognisable, he always comes up with unexpected twists and turns in his solos, and his songwriting is great.

Adrian Smith- The earlier records show him to have much more emotive vibrato than Dave and a better sense of phrasing. IMHO the best song writer of the three as well.

Ditto, though the very underrated Janick Gers is also a great songwriter (and a great showman). Check "Dance of Death" (the song) for confirmation.

Oh i agree that Janick is a great songwriter, Adrian and Janick were always better song writers than Dave. And Gers always has a great stage presence.

Adrian!!! He's mah main man! Loved him on all of Maiden's stuff and on Dickenson's solo efforts! It's also a not so coincidence that I don't enjoy much of the album's by Maiden that he's not on. Spare the very underrated Virtual XI. Next would have to be Dave, sorry gers!

This one is hard. My least favorite is Gers, so the vote goes to Dave Murray, Smith a very close second.

I'm not a big fan of Murray although his style is very recognizable. He's done some great solos, but mostly they are quite meaningless.
But at least his better than Gers, who has written some EXCELLENT songs, but is definitely NOT a great player. Well, some of his solos on the latest album were in fact very good, but often they are annoying... and I HATE it when he plays Adrian's solos!!
And by the way:
Adrian's solo in "Stranger in a strange land" - The best solo _ever_.

Anyone love the Vibrato Adrian uses on his solo on Flight of Icarus (starting at 2:11), I have always loved the way he opened that solo with the amazingly accurate whole tone wide vibrato.

 I have not heard anyone else say that about him, I've been a Maiden fan for about 8 years and never really picked that.

Although some people might not agree with me, but I really see little difference between Smith's and Murrays ability. If you watch the Early Days DVD, the first performance from it in 1980, you will notice that Murray consistently makes out of tune bends, and his vibrato is sometimes a little nervous. Adrian nailed every bend, and his vibrato was simply just so much more effective and emotional. I tend to consider, not only speedy licks done in Legato, Alternate picking, sweep picking, and tapping to be apart of techique. but vibrato and bending are big factors too IMO, as it can sometimes mean the difference between making your other techniques more effective. So in this regard, I think Adrian has a slight technique edge over Murray (but I admit, Murray's bends cleaned up a lot in Brave New World, and his more recent live performances are more consistent IMO).

Actually I talk beyond my knowledge, if I say that I cannot stand Gers because his playing is too much of following of vocal lines and main melodies making him a very annoying player, for I haven't really listened IM after the huge 'No Prayer '-disappointment. Would it be coinsidence that Gers actually entered the band back then and Smith left?
Smith and Murray are both good, but my vote for Smith.
