Topic: That band you fear you will never get into Posted: September 16 2006 at 19:23 |
I say fear, because its not like you dont have any interest in getting into it, you do, you want to...but somehow you cant. This music, this band you want to get into and cant must have something for you to want to understand and appretiate, something that atracts you... cause if you hate punk, and want to get into Sex Pistols...well, this is a bit mezmerising. But if you read or hear a lot of good things about this band, you become interested...and yet, the result is something your ears cant bare. I have that porblem with Meshuggah...specially cause I is held so high as one of the best compositions heavy metal has to offer. But then I listen to the sample songs from PA...and no, I dont like it, and I think I wont for a very long time, if ever! But you see, this is not the first time I had problems with a band. I used to hate grwing, and not understand why a band with this type of singing gets so many compliments...but I persisted, and now Opeth is pretty much my favorite prog metal band. But this is different, here there is nothing I like, no matter how much I want to...
Has this ever happend to anybody? Im pretty sure there must be a lot of people in the same situation.

I just can't get into Opeth. I don't dislike metal, but I have a unknown problem with Opeth and all bands like Opeth.

Dream Theater, too clinical and too many scale-acrobatics ...

Try Damnation. I have the unknown probem too, but Damnation is the exception.
(I think the unknown problem is the growling.......... No wait, I know it is )

The Mars Volta.
I don't know why exactly, since I like prog and can tolerate punk (and actually like some of it) and other harder prog. I think it's the vocalist, I can't stand him, but even the instrumental parts don't do too much for me. I've only heard De-Loused, and I'd give it 3 stars at best.

I don't have problems with anything. I'm just incompatible with various kinds of music, whereas some are especially pleasant to me and that's that.
And by "kinds of music" I do mean means of expression and direction rather than a genre, otherwise things would be too easy. There is something to find fascinating and ignore in each genre.

Oh man, Opeth and Tool for me. I WANT to listen to them. I guess you could say that I respect them, I think they are talented... but yet they really don't "click" with me.

On my first listen to Lateralus, I was very impressed but as the album progressed, the songs seemed too similar to one another and I lost interest.

Tool is another band lost on me.
An Opeth album with no growling?
This is turning into an Opeth thread.

I had the same problem with "I" at first. I liked the first few minutes, but after that it just lost its magic. Then i listened to it again after a few months and not i think it's great. Still over-rated, but a very good song none-the-less.
As for me... i can't really think of any bands that fit in here. Not at the moment anyway. It happened when i first heard John Zorn. It didn't help that it was "The Art of Memory", which is pure free improv, and quite grating for somebody who's never heard such music before. But there was something indescribable that just kept pulling me back and making me listen again and again.
Same thing recently with Dalek. My ego wouldn't let me get past the rapping. Part of me was already past it and enjoying the gritty ambience, but then there was the rapping. And then very recently i was listening to them and my ego just kind of dissolved.
But generally i can tell straight off whether a band/artist has this potential or not, and if they don't i leave them alone and have no desire to like them. I suppose Dillinger Escape Plan might be one i can put here. I can hear the potential, but so far they just haven't clicked.

The Mars Volta. I don´t fear getting into them, it´s just a waste of time for me.
There is so much more music to explore...

Mahavishnu Orchestra
Robert Wyatt (just might....)
Mr. Bungle
Fantomas
And most RIO/Avant
There's a lot more I can't deal with, but I generally like my music moderately challenging or not at all, not challengish to the point of self-mutilation.

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.
