Hey there! I'm an 17-yr-old guy from the UK. I've only recently discovered prog (I'm regretting my tardiness), being first and foremost a classical fan. I've never liked mainstream music having been brought up on the complex and satisfying classical genre, but often wondered: why can't rock be as good? The first piece of quality, progressive-ish rock I heard was 'Fool's Overture' by Supertramp - still one of my favourites, seems to me to demonstrate all the band could have been but abandoned in favour of commercial success - and then I found this site, and swiftly broadened my horizons!
Considering I never heard prog as it was developing, I found it initially hard to discern the comparative originality of various bands - but I immediately recognised it in Genesis and Yes ('Close to the Edge' title track is fantastic! More a symphony than a suite). I also like some Italian symph-prog, and Jethro Tull (loosely prog really).
Has anyone got any recommendations for a prog newbie? Is there any original current prog out there any more - IQ and Arena are good, but not on the same level as the complex stuff of the 70s.
