Topic: Best Mellotron tracks Posted: July 31 2006 at 19:38 |
In no particular order:
1. Watcher Of The Skies ~ Genesis
2. In the Court of the Crimson King ~ King Crimson
3. Siberian Khatru ~ Yes
Any more?
It seems I don't have a lot of 'tron tracks

The Moody Blues - The Voyage - probably the best Mellotron performance ever.

I'll take anything from Voyage of the Acolyte, but to be specific....
Genesis - Watcher of the skies
Dancing with the Moonlit Knight
Blood on the Rooftops
Gentle Giant - Three Friends
Pantagruel's Nativity
King Crimson - Starless
Epitaph
PFM - Appena un po'
.....there are many more.

I've been listening to the Harmonium album (about a fifth season - can't remember the full French title!), there's a lot of Mellotron in there put to good effect. Also Steve Hackett's solo debut, Voyage of the Acolyte. Siberian Khatru is a good choice, there's also "The Remembering" from Tales FTO by Yes.

Well, Stuknipuppa, the last week many reacted on my thread "A big hand for the Mellotron', it contains lots of information and interesting links to search for details about a Mellotron so have a look ...
My favorite Mellotron tracks (out of my head): Zarathustra by Museo Rosenbach/Alanderie by Fantasy/The Scene Of Pale Blue by Outer Limits/all tracks on Barclay James Harvest Live (1974) and Schicke Fuhrs & Frohling Live 1975/Tide by Greenslade/Karelia by Anekdoten ...
Mellotron drenched new albums: LuxAde by La Maschera Di Cera/Gentry by Red Sand/La Meccanica Naturale by Finisterre/Nostos by Ubi Maior and Endgame by Like Wendy
Have fun, fellow Tron-maniacs !

Stuknipuppa:
Below is a link that will provide a nice summary on the mellotron. In short, it was a keyboard that sampled sounds of orchestral instruments and choir voices. However, each key could only be held down for about eight seconds because the tapes on which the sounds were recorded were linear, not looped. The mellotron created, what I call, a surrealistic sigh. Unfortunately, one of my students once asked, "What is that screeching sound?" I hope that this helps.

Starless by King Crimson on Red
The entire Damnation album by Opeth (even though it is a sampled mellotron)

Album-wise, Rick Wakeman's mellotron work on Yes' Close to the Edge is perhaps unsurpassed.

I would say the whole suite House of Four Doors pt1, Legend of a Mind
and House of four Doors pt2, drenched with mellotron and the wonderful
mellotron at the opening of the third door.
