Who do you feel is the best all around frontman in the neo progressive genre (and don't just base it on vocal abilities)? Of course, I'm goin' with my boy H.

Either Fish or Hogarth, probably Fish.

I'm no expert but Fish is great, and I like Hogarth a lot as well.

Just watched a bootleg video of Marillion in Cologne on the Afraid Of Sunlight tour. Really wished some of you could see it and then make the determination. Hogarth really commands the stage. Then again, it's all opinion and you guys are entitled to it. That's what makes this site great.

I will vote for Fish as well. He is such a character on stage.

Fish is an amazing frontman, he has hypnotic qualities on stage..........having seen him perform on several occaisions over 20 years I can say that I think he has an understanding of showmanship that is rare, and certainly one the Hogarth imo can only aspire to. Sorry, I am not a" Fish purist I hate H person"............but I have seen the H man a few times, and whilst good, he always has something  up his sleeve, he does not have that hypnotic quality of Mr Dick.

Peter Nicholls is great, certainly enigmatic, not a great front man in the way I would traditionally see the role. He can often look like a rabbit in the headlights, and does not really interact with the audience.........certainly got some mystery though!

Rob Sowden.............please! remove the wig and he is lost..........keep the wig and I can't look...........sorry! (I do like Arena, I just can not look at Rob!)

I voted Nick Barrett, I remember my friend Anne wetting herself when he lent over from the Marquee stage to hold her hand at the end of the Haunting.....ooooh, way back in 1987, Pendragon gigs always have you jumping up and down, they have you singing your head off and often there is the moment (Edge of the World, Am I really losing you? or Breaking the Spell) where you will stand, forget the people around you and quietly weep. Saw the warm up gig a month ago, looking forward to London and Sheffield in two weeks time........I gave up wearing spike heels to Pendragon gigs, I wear jumping boots! So that's where my vote goes..........Big smile

I love Steve Hogarth's vocals - so rich with emotion and a worthy successor to Fish

<<Rob Sowden.............please! remove the wig and he is lost..........keep the wig and I can't look...........sorry! (I do like Arena, I just can not look at Rob!)>>

It's funny you say that because although I've never seen them in person, I have Caught In The Act and Smoke And Mirrors and I described them to a buddy of mine as being "better heard than seen". Sowden has undoubtedly one of the worst stage presence I've ever seen. You're right...he looks completely lost and out of his element.

And although he's not a frontman, bassist Ian Salmon looks completely bored. From his 'stiff as a board' mannerisms to that smirk of his. Smoke And Mirrors comes with a bonus feature of Wrightson and Jowitt reuniting with them, and I must say that they're a completely different band with the both of them (especially the vibrant Jowitt).

I like Arena, but I wouldn't be disappointed if Nolan and Pointer revamped the lineup. Keep Mitchell because the guy is a great talent!

Though Fish is a very charismatic front man, I have to go with Steve Hogarth... you should see him perform (parts of) "Brave" live... total menace LOL

<<Where did you get your bootleg, e-dub????>>

While belonging to a Yahoo Groups list, some guy in Malta was unloading his collection. He had a copy of the AOS and HIE tours on one tape, and Brave Live (Maybe in Italy. Not sure.), so I bought them. Unfortunately, the videos were PAL and I live in the States, so I had to have them converted to NTSC and put on DVD-R's.

The quality of the AOS/HIE shows are VERY spotty; however, it gives you a chance to see a younger Marillion at the peak of their game (although, with Marbles, they've peaked again). The only sad thing is you can see where Rothers really began to put on the weight.

The Brave DVD was well worth it. I've got the Brave Live 2002 DVD from Racket, but there's something different about seeing Marillion touring in support of Brave. The crowd was going nuts, too.

In short, I'm glad I have the Brave show, but the other one I break out every now and again.

Can you suggest a good Fish performance? I've only got Live At Loreley and I think I need to refer to something else of Fish's. Good show, but Fish was like a sloth. You could tell the hard living was catching up.

I'd like to get something from his solo tour; however, being that I'm not a fan of his solo material (I have some, and it's OK), I'm a bit apprehensive.

Hands down, the best DVD I have is Brave Live 2002. As coarse as his voice has become, H really outdoes himself on this show. Very theatrical. Especially on "Runaway".

Yes! I think even the skeptics should admit that he brought a bit of musicianship to Marillion. The man is an excellent keyboardist and has turned into a capable guitarist. I think I read he never picked up a guitar until the Brave tour.

Recital of the Script is a very energetic, dramatic performance, if a little cheesy at times. My personal favourite by him, though, is from the Live in Poland 1997 DVD, the Medley in the middle of the show is cracking, and the performance of Cliche shows how much of a talented player Robin Boult really is.
