Topic: Self Righteous Prog Fans Posted: May 17 2006 at 19:32 |
Just a bit of fun (no bashing, keep it light)
Who do you think are the most radical, hard nosed, fanatical fans out there in the prog world?
In that you can´t have a debate or disagree with them, they refuse to change their opinion come hell or high water.
My vote goes to the Yes fans, it´s harder than arguing with a Christian that you don´t believe in Jesus(an example)

I'm going with Marillion. Given the fact that the fans financed their 1997 tour of the States with the tour fund, spearheaded by Jeff Pelltier. They've also done pre-sales of Anoraknophobia and Marbles before they even recorded it. That band is fan driven and they appreciate every ounce of it.

I've never witnessed anything like Dream Theater fans (and I was one of
these types years ago) that will defend ANYTHING the band has ever done
and take personal offense if you do not share their opinion on Dream
Theater.
Dream Theater forums are not well known for their ability to take
criticism of the band very well. Anytime I recommend a song to a
DT fan, they usually tell me that they don't have time to listen
because they're busy listening to all of Scenes From A Memory for the
385th time all the way through.

Being more of a Genesis fan I'll point the finger at the Dream Theater fans.

:( I haven't ever seen any Floyd fanatics. However, I have seen several inane Yes fans. Somebody actually told me that Wakeman was the best keyboardist ever. Period. I almost strangled my monitor. :)
I vote Yes, although that's simply because I've mainly witnessed Yes fanatics.

No bashing eh? Since you can't bake certain kinds of cake without
breaking a few eggs, then how 'bout some smashing?
"Eggy-weggys, I would like to smash them."
In
the Canterbury scene (you can try but you "can't, er, bury" me), the true rotter's club, that being the rotten EGG fanatics, are hardly "The Polite Force". Bunch of arrogant
EGG-heads if you ask me *ducks rotten EGGs from those fowl turkeys*. Well,
sorry drEGGs, but the yolks on you. The CHICKEN comes before the EGG! Now
that I've sufficiently scrambled your already fried Egg-heads with this theoretical revelation, I declare that the EGG battle is
OVA! That sure was over easy, and I ain't the one left with EGG on my face,
either. So there! Bunch of omelette heads if you ask me.
Just being silly there for the sake of being silly
as is sometimes my wont. I've never met an EGG fan I didn't like, but then I've
never really met an EGG fan - as in offline. I like what I've heard of EGG by
the way.
Really, from the list I'd choose Genesis, but
strictly from my limited life experience. Many Peter Gabriel Genesis era fans in my
life (well, actually just a couple of my friends to be more accurate -- or at
least one of them anyway, yeah one I'm sure of) claim that everything made after
Gabriel departed is abhorrent garbage that should be burned along with the
idiots who listen to it (or
at least he says he doesn't think it's that that great, or not as good
anyway, he has a valid point on the whole post Gabriel repertorire I
think, even if it's mostly a subjective evaluation, but whatever, you
get the idea).
While I love Gabriel era Genesis,
I also like the following three Collins as lead-singer albums -- especially "A
Trick of the Tail" and "Wind and Wuthering." Am I to believe the rabid Peter
Gabriel era Genesis fans (or 'fan' specifically) who says (or doesn't really say
it, or even really think it, but...) that I'm some kind of a traitorous gimp for
appreciating any of the post-Gabriel work, and should be burned at the
progressive stake for my heresy? No one should have to deal with such
a murderous Genesis brigade (even if it's just one person, and he's really quite
polite about it).
In all truth, I have felt a little patronised by more than
one Gabriel-era Genesis fan for liking anything after he left. So I vote for specifically Peter Gabriel era
Genesis fans as arrogant, self-righteous fanatics for the heck of it (although I really can't make an informed
decision).

TOOOOOOOOOOL
Or THE MARS VOLTA (you could have Cedric and Omar making fart noises non-stop for 15 minutes and it would go triple-platinum).

Well I'm a rabid Gabriel era fan but Genesis was great until Steve Hackett left, I believe Wind & Wuthering is in the same level of my least favorite Gabriel era album, Selling England by the Pound (Even each one has a terrible song, the infamous More Fool Me and the cheesy Your Own Special Way)
People only recognized Steve's value when he left and Genesis became (IMHO) crap.
