Topic: Cover: Pink Floyd or Yes? Posted: April 06 2006 at 14:26 |
This two bands have the best, or at elast my favorite album covers. On one hand you have Roger Dean´s fanatasy and on the other Hypnosis (among others) excellent photography. My vote goes for Pink Floyd, all their covers between Atom heart mother till The division bell are faboulous!!!

Love Roger Dean's work however Hipnosis seemed to have a more
thoughtful doubled-meaning approach to their covers with alot of
humour, psychedelia and hidden messages so I'll go
for the Floyd covers.

oh man.. no matter how trippy or cool Floyd's covers were.. they simply
don't compare to the terrible twosome of Tales and Relayer by
themselves. Art... that's what they were.

Pink Floyd because not only are the covers great, but the pictures that accompany the lyrics are also great. Storm Thurgeson is a genius. I also prefer creative pictures over a drawing; I think that getting a great picture requires more work. (Not that Dean had easy job.)
I think CTTE's cover is incredibly lazy. Relayer is good, but CTTE drags the rest of Yes.

Both of them are absolutly stunning and they each fit the music so
well, I mean you couldn't have the cover for Fragile on the CD of DSOTM
it just wouldnt work. As for the quality i personally have to go for
Yes, it's just so original and basically looks damn cool.

You think that taking a picture requires much more work than one of Dean's
pieces? I'd like to think not.

I go for Pink Floyd covers
They are "better" than the covers of the albums of Yes

But thinking of the cover, setting it all up, and then manipulating it some, I think so. Besides that there are also the inside pictures that accompany the lyrics for every song (and manages to fit almost all of them extremely well); Yes just has the front and back of the LP. That's where I think it's harder; maybe the covers would be about the same; it's hard to say because I don't know how long Dean had to spend to make covers like Relayer (or how long it took Storm to make covers like WYWH and Animals).
Don't misunderstand, I'm not saying that by any stretch of the imagination thet Dean's covers are bad (except maybe for CTTE, because gradients are lame); I prefer Storm though.

I'll vote for Floyd. The Division Bell and Animals is enough to make up for Meddle

How can you not like Meddle? I think they really thought outside the box on that one. It's like a message from God saying, "Open you damn ears so you can hear this bad ass music!" Since it is a picture of an ear.

Fragile and Relayer are the only Yes covers that catch my eye. Pink Floyd has A Saucerful of Secrets, More, Ummagumma, Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and Animals. It is defenately an unfair comparison. If it was Floyd and Genesis covers than it would be pretty close in my opinion.
