Anyone got any advice on the better post rock bands.

I get the feeling Gospeed you Black Emperor are the most popular, I did buy one of their albums (don't remember the name, couldn't read it on the spine of the CD just looked like ?*&£! or something) but the music lacked any kind of dynamic and it sounded like they couldn't play their instruments to me, nice mood though, so I took it back to the shop.

I love Sigur Ros although I have to be in the mood to listen as they are occasionally sweet and quite emotionally demading.

I really like Mogwai as well for their noisier moments.

any suggestions?

Ridicule is the burden of genius.

GYBE, Explosions in the sky and Mogwai for me. I don't like Sigur Ros much.

If you are after the more slow-burn stuff ie GYBE then check out almost anything on their label,Constellation.
A Silver Mount Zion (Constellation Records) are well worth a listen.

As Progtologist recommends, Explosions in the Sky are brilliant and the last three albums by Oneida,

Other Post Rock artists to check out are.
Talk Talk's last two albums
Tortoise,Bastro and Slint are obvious recommendations from the early part of the genre.

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

Godspeed You is awesome. If the one you heard WASN'T "Lift Yr. Skinny Fists..." I suggest getting that one.

Explosions In The Sky would be your best bet. imo.

All of the above are very good recommendations.

You can also look into the post rock bands listed under that label here in PA:

Experimental/Post-Rock bands/artists list

2. BARK PSYCHOSIS England
3. CUL DE SAC United States
4. DO MAKE SAY THINK Canada
5. DON CABALLERO United States
6. EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY United States
7. FLY PAN AM Canada

8. FLYING SAUCER ATTACK

England
9. GASTR DEL SOL* United States

16. SARAX* Chile
17. SIGUR RÓS Iceland
18. TORTOISE* United States
19. ULVER* Norway
20. VALLEY OF THE GIANTS Canada

I love 1-10, 12-14, 16-20.

Recommended for you I think would be 1-2, 4-8, 12-14, 16, 18, 20.

Do give GYBE another try, tough! And by another try, I mean sit down with the ablum, preferentially with headphones, alone and listen to it with total concentration several times. Then perhapse after that you will start to feel and get into their music. I relly think this is essential to do in order to fully experience their music.

Enjoy

Explosions in the Sky seem to be very popular, which is quite suprising.

I highly suggest Mono, Giant Squid, Kayo Dot and Ulver.

It is also a good idea for your own self that you give GYBE another chance. Personally Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Anthenas To Heaven had a big impact on me emotionally. Maybe you should listen to that one as well?

Lacked any kind of dynamic? Their music is almost entirely ABOUT dynamics (along with mood/atmosphere) or at least that's what I thought...

Unless that's not what you mean... do you mean "they're not dynamic" rather than "they don't have dynamics"? Dynamics in my understanding means changing from quiet to loud or building up to being loud and such.

Wow, it looks like I'm just complaining...
