The Gentle Giant Twitter account posted today that a song of theirs (Proclemation of the power and the glory) had been sampled in the opening track of a new Travis Scott album. I am no fan of hip-hop, at all, but I think its... funny? cool? To see prog tracks being used in modern pop music. I remember Kanye West sampled Jon Anderson's vocals from a Mike Oldfield song, but that's it. Anyone know any other good examples?

The song with a sample from GG:

I believe that Kanye also sampled 21st Century Schizoid Man in his song "Power"
A Human Being, Existing.

DJ Shadow used samples from Tangerine Dream and Pekka Pohjola for two songs on his Endtroducing album:

If Jazzrock-fusion is considered there's TONS.

Gentle Giant (Funny Ways):

Mahavishnu Orchestra (You Know, You Know):

The Madvillain song is nice, surprised to see more GG samples. Jazzrock-fusion does make more sense as a sample.

I really don't know. Aside from prog, I listen to blues, classical or jazz, that's it. Sometimes some world music as well, but not that often. Hip-hop, modern pop, rap, etc, don't really get me excited.

Some De La Soul picks to start off...

Yes - The Ritual

Rick Wakeman - Catherine of Aragon

Gentle Giant - The Advent of Panurge

And now for some others!

10cc - The Worst Band In The World

Yes - Heart of the Sunrise

Eberhard Weber - Sand-Glass

Animals As Leaders - Monomyth

Return to Forever - The Romantic Warrior

Discovering samples I recognised from hip hop tracks on prog records when previewing records in the record store is a massive part of why I fell in love with prog to begin with :)

If this is the track I think it is, expect a music video that was mainly executive produced by my mom. She won't get credit, her boss will. But she (her boss) was on vacation, in addition to most of the other team, so mom really did all the other non-location work for the shoot. She doesn't mind though, as long as she gets paid, she has no interest in getting the credit. Been in the game too long to give a heck. Off-topic, I know, but wanted to mention it anyway. Apparently Travis Scott is very difficult to work with.

She works with a production company as a producer. Historically, she's done a lot of work in advertising. And well before I was born she worked for production companies at many famous studios on several tv shows and a few movies, most notably Aaron Spelling Production under Douglas Kramer. This isn't her first music vid, but she doesn't do them often. Apparently this Travis Scott one was a nightmare though.

If I were a prog artist and hear my stuff sampled by a rapper, I would give up to the possible earnings and ask the samples to be removed.

About the hip-hop, pop stuff and their likes, I think that there's so much good music around that I don't see a reason for wasting time with them. I have only one life and maybe it won't be enough to listen to all the existing good prog at least once.
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

Here's an uncommon example of modern prog "sampling" a 70s prog classic.
At 6:34 timestamp there's a guitar lick that bears striking resemblance to the "main" motif off Dancing with the Moonlit Knight by Genesis. xD This has to be intentional.

I tried to listen to the things that you people have posted, but I just can't stand a 3 second loop with the word nigga repeated arrythmically on top of it for minutes on end. That must be the least progressive "music" in the world.

Quote I just can't stand a 3 second loop with the word nigga repeated
This is precisely why the only type of hip hop I listen to is Polish conscious/ambitious hip hop.

I posted because of relevance and not because they're personal favorites (a couple of the ones I included I even dislike), but is there really all that much of that thing going on in the songs here?
