Both are very renowned bands in their own rights.

Steely Dan is known for being very accomplished Jazz Rock musicians, Donold Fagen, Walter Becker and their various session musicians.

On the other hand Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band did some really bizzare but artistic recordings from his magnum opus 'Trout Mask Replica' to the last album 'Ice Cream for Crow'. His music was classified as proto-punk by some but he also did some blues, free-jazz too we better classify him as Avant-Rock mainly.

So here it is, choose your musicians people:)

Actually, both are listed as prog bands by PA. Captain Beefheart is listed under RIO/Avant-Prog, and Steely Dan is listed under Jazz Rock/Fusion.

To quote the FAQ:

Poll creation and voting is only available to forum members with higher ranks than Newbie. Once you've posted 40 messages on the forum, you'll be able to vote in prog polls. This was introduced on the forums to avoid people creating fake accounts to mess with the polls.

Thanks for the correction:) I thought that only bands like King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Soft Machine and Rush were prog bands but I guess it's a more diverse term.

Interestingly, the four bands you mention are all listed under different sub-genre:

King Crimson - Eclectic Prog
Pink Floyd - Psychedelic/Space Rock
Soft Machine - Canterbury Scene
Rush - Heavy Prog

Of course, there's also Yes and Genesis, who are both listed under Symphonic Prog.

Beefheart, no contest. Never liked Steely Dan, I think those two are really different animals.

I've never understood what the fuss and hype was all about Beefheart. Never liked his music.

Two very different things to compare (I kept saying poll, but it's not, I edited this twice LOL)

I do enjoy listening to Steely Dan from time to time.

Love both bands immensely..but I’d give the slight edge to the Captain.
Anyways these two are perhaps the perfect opposites. Sort of like Nivea handcreme vs the sandpaper ashtray.

I don't dislike SD ... it was a band for the hip, the cool, and the stony girls that thought they were growing up enough to spend their time with a man! And the little pipe that went around was a lot of fun, for the girls of course. It was, by then, just a commercial enterprise ... and not anything else ... yeah, yeah ... nice music ... so what ... a thousand other bands also had nice music!

The Captain is an acquired taste and just caught the special on him, and it was sad ... really sad ... that as he became a better singer, the critics jump on him for not groveling some more and doing another song that sounded the same, which, eventually, got him to quit altogether and go spend the rest of his time painting .. a real nice way to say FU to the ugliest side of the business of music and its fans ... always wanting a hit and never respecting the artist ...

You can have your SD ... and go smoke it, of course ... no sense wasting some good fun deals from the band!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Your stereotype is wrong and disturbing. Would you say Captain is for those youth who drop acid on a daily basis?

SD for me and I was neither hip, cool, or female.

Like both....but as stated, two very different sounds ;odd comparison choice.
Like the earlier/mid lp's best by both....favorite Beefheart would be Decals,Spotlight Kid ,and Clear spot
and for Dan, Countdown, Katy Lied and Aja.

One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

...

The time that SD was there, specially in Southern California was more "bent" and "weird" and "odd" than you probably can imagine ... I thought it was fine, and certainly better than the crap that the Strip was playing in so many places that was really boring and poor ... at least SD was a great band!

And catching one show in Santa Barbara, made you want to say ... never again ... with the band also taking tokes from the various items that the "guests" in the first row were offering. It's a wonder that they all didn't get busted but in those days it was hip'r to go after Pink Floyd fans, than SD fans!

Please remember that all times, and places, have their "disturbing" this and that ... and I think that you are looking at the band, and placing them on a small pedestal, and I'm not sure that is wise.

When I saw the Captain btw, almost no one in the audience was stoned, and outside, you could smell the clean air ... so your comment is rather off in my experience. I never really thought that the Captain was about drugs ... and it is strange that he is thought of as such, when he was known to talk bad about a lot of drugs ... specially when he came from an area that had so many drugs around ... and him and FZ were probably the first ones to make sure they didn't bother with it and had a better reason to avoid it.

Even stranger that a man would have to resort to "drugs" when he knew he was an artist, and then quit music altogether to continue his life as a painter ... and a successful one at that! I'm not sure that you need to be ripped up in drugs to do what he did in song, or canvas ... it was the same person!

Steely Dan - superb catalogue. Never got into Captain Beefheart (and I have tried to see what the fuss was all about)

Captain Beefheart all the way for me. Trout Mask Replica is a pinnacle of human abstract artistic presentation. Absolutely transcendental and timeless; I have an imported version in the mail on the way as we speak!

Beefheart is one of those you love or hate. I have heard anybody saying his music indifferent. And also I think before I got into prog I wouldn´t also understand Beefheart. But some years after prog I just so started to love him!!

For those who don't get Beefheart....put Clear Spot on...and crank up the volume.

I do think some of his albums are too esoteric....those who rave about Trout Mask must have been a bit wasted when they first heard it.
Wink
ps...please don't throw any trout masks at me...
