A single member. Band name remains.

Doesn't have to be a band - could be a long-time guitarist of a solo artist.

The first name that comes to my mind is Roger Waters, but I'm sure I'll think of others.

Hawkwind after Lemmy. They at least changed dramatically to lyrics based songs even if many fans still liked them.

Pink Floyd without Wright is a much bigger "afterdrop" than Waters for me.
Bigger on the inside.

Queen without Mercury.
They should have stopped. What they are doing now with Lambert plus the god awful biopic is just lame imo

^ I assume Page, but of course Page inherited the Yardbirds name and Zep were 'The New Yardbirds' for a month or two until they became Led Zeppelin.   But you know that.

Oh is that when they went pop? I was thinking Phil Collins managed to imitate Peter Gabriel well enough to avoid that cliff edge when he left.

Speaking of going commercial, Ultravox! after John Foxx.

No doubt. Never even bothered to hear Queen sans Mercury. Of course they were declining before he passed on.

Here's some more.

Marillion after Fish

Van Halen after David Lee Roth

AC / DC after Bon Scott

Genesis after Peter Gabriel

Gong after Daevid Allen (still good just not as so)

Yes after Chris Squire (end it already!)

Megadeth after Marty Friedman

Iron Maiden after Bruce Dickinson (thankfully he's back)

Alice In Chains after Layne Staley

Red Hot Chili Peppers after John Frusciante

I agree with this one! I love both versions of Ultravox. The synthpop era is some of the best new wave however i do prefer the earlier post-punk overall.

Triumph after Rik Emmett left. They only released one more album and it wasn't very good. Rik gave Triumph some depth and when he left, that depth went with him.

Spock's Beard after Neal Morse left. SB struggled to find their own voice after Neal left. They finally did but initially it was a pretty big drop off.

That one is huge for me. Sure, Cantrell is just as much AiC as Layne was, even more so from a song writing standpoint but losing Layne's voice and that harmony between him and Jerry made the band lesser. The current AiC isn't bad but it just isn't the same anymore.

The Doors were wise to call it quits after Morrison died. Queen should have followed suit. It's just not the same without Mercury. Yeah, Journey found a singer that could mimic Steve Perry pretty well but it wasn't quite right nonetheless. Sometimes you should just stop.

I disagree on some of the things you say here.
Queen finished on a high note with Innuendo so no declining imo.
Marillion sans Fish - no decline.
AC/DC maybe a little bit
Megadeth - the last one with Marty was pretty weak
Genesis - a gradual decline rather than a drop.
Maiden? Only brave new world is praise worthy so it is decline.
The last two I agree.
