Curious to know if there has been any female prog bands?
I know there are female artists in bands, but I've never heard of an all female prog act!!....

Yep, Ars Nova were the first to come to mind for me. They were an all female prog trio from Japan in the 90's who sort of disappeared at some point. They were heavily influenced by ELP and Il Baletto di Bronzo from what I've read and you can hear the ELP influence although I'm not that familiar with them(just based on the little I have heard).
There was also a rather obscure all female proggish band from the early 70's called Mother Superior. Other than those two I can't think of many. I think there was one other all female Japanese band but I don't remember the name. The modern band Bent Knee has two female members though. One is the lead singer who plays keys and the other is the bass player(I think). Great band that you should check out.

Rasputina. Actually on most albums it was three women up front backed with a male drummer, but they cut at least one album with an all-female lineup.

Ars Nova still exists, but their activity has slowed due to personal life commitments. Not long ago, they held a concert which featured the original/current formations. Japan seems to have no shortage of bands with at least two female players in prog rock, fusion and metal circles. But till they added ex-Gerard drummer Masuhiro Goto (who has since been replaced), Ars Nova was the only completely all-girl prog rock group. Mother Superior was indeed a British all-girl jazz-prog-folk rock quartet. They had one album, in 1975, but I suspect it was recorded a bit earlier. It has a late 60s/early 70s sound.

^ The album Gamel is a good place to start. It's some out-there avant-tribal madness though!

Angel'in Heavy Syrup is a pretty interesting all girl from Japan that released some cool albums in the 90's. There's a spacy and almost shoegazy quality to their music.
For math rock madness, there's all girl trio Tricot from...guess where...Japan. There's a few other all-girl math rock bands from that country (not to mention the slew of all-girl power metal and indie bands there). Japanese women know how to rock out. Tricot...great use of a small drum-kit, vocals are an acquired taste though

^ Not prog, but in the vein of completely rocking all-female Japanese bands, Nisennenmondai deserve to be mentioned. They play minimalist banging techno using guitar, bass and actual drum kit, and do so with tremendous precision. Never had the opportunity to see them live but I understand that there is usually sweat dripping off the ceiling.

They're my go-to band for dreamy psych. Too bad they called it a day so abruptly after four albums. Love 'em!

^Yeah, Green & Gold is definitely my favorite of theirs
![]() Digging into the Japanese music scene, I was surprised as to how many all-girl pop/rock/indie/metal/prog/punk bands there are (hell...some of those bands venture into quite a few of those genres at once!). There's even all-girl grindcore bands there such as Flagitious Idiosyncrasy in the Dilapidation, an unsurprisingly wacky take on the genre. It's also common for co-ed bands to form such as Octaviagrace, featuring a female vocalist but also a virtuoso guitarist (she's really good). I'm guessing a lot of it has to do with a fair amount of schools in Japan that cater specifically to the arts. Music is emphasized there, and these girls learn instruments...hang out together and start jamming. The ratio of female musicians recording stuff in Japan seems to be at a higher ratio than any other country, and that's not just per-capita. Especially for drummers. Lots of great exuberant female drummers there.

Fantastic all-female prog album from 1975. Don't miss this one.
Some of their songs have a Nektar feel to it. Edited by progbaby - October 03 2017 at 11:58 |
