Topic: Prog on the Radio Posted: September 05 2005 at 10:12 |
This weekend, the "classic rock" station in NY (Q104.3) has been playing "top ten" lists compiled from listener suggestions. They include such things as top ten summer songs, top ten Beatles songs, top ten songs you are embarrassed to love, top ten songs your parents hated, etc.
Two things seem relevant here. First, of the top ten "keyboard" songs, the #1 pick was Karn Evil 9 Part 1. (Hoedown was #11, so didn't get played.) Also in the top ten was Roundabout. Those were the only two prog songs on the list. Note that, re our poll on The Who, they had two in the top ten here: Baba O'Riley and Won't Get Fooled Again. Strangely, Edgar Winter's Frankenstein did not even make the top 15.
Also, of the top ten classic rock songs (the equivalent of the top ten of all time), Comfortably Numb came in at #9. The rest of the list has remain largely unchanged for almost 10 years: Sympathy for the Devil (#10), Comfortably Numb, Won't Get Fooled Again, Born to Run, Hotel California, Hey Jude (#5, up from #7 last year), Baba O'Reily, Layla, Freebird, and (of course) Stairway to Heaven (#1 for the 15th year in a row).
Peace.

^^^it strikes me that the good folks of the US have a considerably better taste in music & knowledge of rock than we do over here....where the majority of the population will have forgotten that half of those gems ever existed...

Not sure how Baba O'Riley and Won't Get Fooled Again are in a "keyboard top 10". Both brilliant songs but weren't the keyboard parts are played by a sequencer?

Yes, there are some exceptional classic rock stations around the US. We have one in Chicago that'll play classic Genesis, Starship Troopers, an extended version of the single Thick As A brick..i.e...additional material from that song so that it spans about 10 minutes length, the longer version of Tuesday Afternoon, and in the middle of the night they have a show on called sanctuary which will play longer pieces like The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, In-A-Gadda-Da Vida(17 minute version), In The Court of The Crimson King and sometimes even Echoes.
Unfortunately they cover WAY too much Eagles and Sprinsteen.![](smileys/smiley11.gif)

That's what I figured maani, but you would think at least some of them would have seen the songs played live and wondered who was playing the keyboard part. Oh well. At least the number one is good.

Wow. The Philladelphia stations barely ever play any prog songs. I've 'eard only one Gabriel Genesis song and only a couple known Yes tunes, as well as some Jethro Tull i.e. "Bungle in the Jungle"

There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime.
I never said I was frightened of dying.

Most so called ''classic rock'' stations are downright boring. They keep it safe, playing the same old songs over and over again,I mean ,how many times do we have to sit through ''Born to be Wild" ? ![](smileys/smiley7.gif) We have one here in Montreal, like most large N.A. cities and it's pathetically boring and predictable.I've made many requests for bands I think would fit the format, but they never play them;Gentle Giant,Wishbone Ash,Caravan,Camel,Steve Hackett,ect...

for the most part I would agree. During peak hours that same classic rock station plays it safe with lots of Eagles, Sprinsteen and bands I wouldn't even define as Classic rock..like REO Speedwagon, Foreigner and such.![](smileys/smiley11.gif)

During the Who performance at the Live8 I saw the keyboardist play
the intro to Won't Get Fooled Again on a Hammond. he changed the
tone manually with one hand while hitting the keys with the other
and it sounded almost the same as the album. I've read somewhere
that for the original recording Townshend used a VSC3 synth (the
machine used by Rick Wright, Tangerine Dream, Franco Battiato in is
early albums etc.) but I think he just used it to filter the organ and
obtain the phasing sound.

I stand (partially) corrected then. I've never seen The Who use a live keyboard player for these parts. I'm not a keyboard player but perhaps someone can tell me - how difficult is Won't Get Fooled Again to play on the keyboard?

The station here sounds like the one in Chicago: they do play some Yes, Tull, ELP, Genesis, Moody Blues, Floyd, etc., though not as frequently as I might like. And although they - thankfully! - rarely play Born to be Wild, the do play alot of Eagles, U2 (which is fine with me), and "overplayed" classics. Still, on the whole, it's better than almost anything else we have.
Peace.

Q107.1 here in Toronto often plays Yes, Genesis, Rush, Pink Floyd, and ITCOTCK songs. Most of the time they play the same old boring stuff though.

I sometimes hear an ELP song on the radio. Queen is also played very often..
What I was more surprised about, is that prog gets alot of credit in magazines lately. I picked up a mag called "music collector" or something, look at the reviews, and I see two Gentle Giant albums reviewed, both have a 5 star rating!!! I see prog mentioned often in mags, you just have to know where to look.

There is nothing in the U.K. that I am aware of that plays Prog.We have Virgin radio that caters for mainstream safe rock and housewife pop/rock and that it is it.The main source is Radio one and that is a complete joke.So you people in the U.S.A and Canada can consider yourselves fortunate that you at least have some stations willing to play some rock and prog.

Down here in Texas, our classic rock stations play a lot of the southern stuff, eg: ZZ Top, Lynyrd Synyrd, Tesla et al. It's kind of annoying. ![](smileys/smiley11.gif) ![](smileys/smiley19.gif)
But, often I'll hear a good amount of Floyd and Rush. Sometimes Yes and ELP, but not often.
And then when we're really lucky, they'll do a 'pay for play' thing, where you give money to be donated to troops, needy people etc. and you pick a song you want to here. That's where Xanadu, Starship Trooper, Sheep, Toccatta etc. come in. It's pretty cool.
