Topic: 8 Best Prog Albums of All Time Posted: October 11 2016 at 13:35 |
Are any of these "best prog" lists that crop up from time to time *not* completely original and incisive, bringing a new angle to the topic?
;-)
This one came out recently.

Certainly disappointed by the first 2 choices, but I am pleasantly surprised to see Pawn Hearts, Future Days and One Size Fits All have been included. I can understand why the two former could be considered, but I am not sure about the latter even if I personally think it is a great album.

Good list, but not the best by all means.

Pretty poor list if you ask me. As strong as Fragile is the general consensus is that CTTE is the top Yes album (myself included). One size fits all and future days are way down the list in terms of influencial Prog albums and quite rightly are seldom mentioned in best-of-all-time lists. I can understand why WYWH is at No 1 (even though I hate that album), but I would argue DSOTM deseves that top spot (or at least top 8!) for being the best known and loved Prog album of all time.
I'm ok with the remaining albums on the list, but still strongly disagreeing with half the albums in the top 8 does not sit well with me!

There are probably 6 or 7 Pink Floyd albums better than Wish You Were Here. There are a good 4 Yes albums better than Fragile. There are 4 King Crimson albums I like more than Court. There's at least one Can album better than Future Days. There's a great deal of Frank Zappa-involved albums better than One Size Fits All. Pawn Hearts deserves its place, although Godbluff is better. Selling England and Thick as a Brick are acceptable, at least those artists never made anything better.
Decent enough list, obviously I don't agree much. The lack of Italian prog alone is absurd.

Prog music is so diverse and probably the genre with more quality musicians and performers that a best of list requires at least a hundred titles to be somewhat complete. And that just to start scratching the surface. A ten best has to include at least one title of the following bands, in no particular order: Pink Floyd, Yes, ELP, Genesis, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Renaissance, Led Zeppelin, and how many great bands are left? It is an impossible task, as for the list published I think is really poor.

Too lazy or not enough time/place to make it ten? Anyway, that's just another list and people in 2016 should be tired with that Top 10, Top 20, Top 6 or whatever kind of list that may exist under our sun - especially if said list is as lame as this one. Furthermore, I can't even see the point of making another list of best prog albums: it's flogging the dried bones of a dead horse.

"Close to the Edge" is in my opinion a bit overrated. a good 4 star album, yes, but it lacks the daring that is in my opinion necessary for a 5 star album (as a prog rock album CttE is not daring at all). "Relayer" is a much more daring album and hence in my opinion much better

I am fairly certain that the list is "inspired" by BBC 4's Desert Island Discs show, where the guest or indeed cast-away is asked to chose 8 albums to bring with them on a deserted island (hence the title). As for the list? It's a list alright Nah cool to see Can mentioned for once, but we'll never ever hit the proverbial sweet spot and conjure up a list that satisfies every pork rock fan out there. Some like it hot - others like it cold. I am a chilli man myself.

I'd replace Zappa with Amon Duul 2. YETI, LEMMINGS or VIVE LA TRANCE. MEDDLE would replace WISH YOU WERE HERE. TOPOGRAPHIC would replace FRAGILE. And yes, Eight is NOT Enough. Banco, PFM, Ange and Magma deserve being there. A PASSION PLAY is my favourite, as well as RED, or LARKS' TONGUES. The Can choice is correct. When it comes to Lists, Franz is my favourite.

Perhaps if we learned to read we would find it says "8 of the best" not the best 8.
Fine starter kit anyway.
