I grew up listening to ELP and early Soft Machine, and I have been wondering what other prog bands use the same keys-bass-drums format as those groups? I enjoy guitar but I would like to hear more of what the keyboard trio has to offer. Can anyone recommend some more recent bands, from within the past 20 years or so? Links would be helpful Thanks!

Egg is the band for you. Dave Sinclair (the talented one with that name), Mont Campbell and unnamed drummer, shone brightly in the fermament for a number of years. They should have been lauded like ELP, but were not. Sadly the two leaders of the group are now dismissive of prog and their hstory. I think they are still as good as it gets though.
footnote - oops just read recent bands - well 70's is recent for some of us..you had to be there man.. Anyway try Elephant 9, a recent group, jazz, fuzz, thunderous bass, in plac3es like The Nice on steriods. a keyboard led trio. Edited by NutterAlert - June 18 2015 at 07:37 |

Thanks, I'll look into Elephant 9. Egg were a very interesting band. My favorite song of theirs is "A Visit to Newport Hospital". They should have gotten more recognition.

Try a band called Yak....they only have one album currently but I'm a fan and wish they would release another new one. Keyboard dominated with no guitar per se. Mellow at times like TD but also heavier like ELP at times. I think they have a song or two on you tube.

There is a new The Flower Kings' side project called Barracuda Triangle that released their debut in 2014. This might fit the bill.

There is a very talented new Italian band, by the name of Feat. Esserela', which fits the bill. They were recently added to the PA database, and their album is still available on Progstreaming: http://www.progstreaming.com/_wb/pages/play-album.php?activeAlbum=01186%20-%20Feat.%20Esserela%20-%20Tuorl

Thanks for posting that. Those guys are pretty good...at least that one song is. I looked for other stuff by them but couldn't find anything. Do you have links to any of their other music?

Heh I came here to recommend elephant9...
Other than them maybe try out American act Zombi. It's a duo though but on their album Spirit Animal, they truly sound like a trio with the add on of some very Squiresque bass ornamentations: |

Krunkelstiltskin are a young band from USA. They are quartet but with two keyboards players, bass player and the drummer and they are released a full-lenght debut album which is very interesting, as the first-class modern prog album as well. http://krunkelstiltskin.bandcamp.com/album/into-the-aurifice

Flat 122 is a Japanese keyboards-guitar-drums trio (no bassist).
