Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere recently on PA. I'm new and could not find recent discussions. |

http://www.cdbaby.com/ and http://bandcamp.com/ are both good places to purchase music where the artist gets a decent cut of the revenues. These are generally acts that aren't signed to major labels.

Probably not, but she likes a fair bit of prog and prog-related music. Her fave is Kate Bush and she's attended, Jon Anderson solo, Rush, Yes and Dream Theater (those are the artists with prog cred; there were many more) with me in the last few years. However, after Dream Theater this year (amazing show), she said that she will not attend a hard rock or metal type show with me again. It's too loud for her to enjoy. Time to find some local friends who like what i like! Thanks for the tips, all.

Out of interest, what percentage do bands get on bandcamp? |

From the Bandcamp pricing policy:
PricingThe basic service is free. There are no signup costs, and no listing fees. |

You could also purchase from the band's site (sometimes it's on bandcamp or it's a label site)

You know, what I'm probably going to do now is raise what I pay so that after BC gets their cut, the artist gets 100% of what they're asking for. e.g., for a $8 download I'll pay $9.42. |

Hello twalsh Best is to purchase directly from the artist and or band, most of them have a purchase option on their website. Otherwise, buying directly from their Record Label is second best. CD Baby is another option, Record labels send their music to CD Baby and they in turn spread it further i.e. to Amazon, I-tunes etc. However not all record labels use CD Baby, some also sell it directly on Amazon etc. and so do some bands. hugs

In my experience, a live-in female companion takes a lot more space than a few hundred CDs. Choices, choices .. |

Bandcamp fees are really not exorbitant in my opinion for such a great service. I don't work for Bandcamp but it's the main service I use for my music and it's really the most efficient and the most gainful

I try to buy directly from the artist first, even if it takes a little while longer to get when it ships from overseas. MY latest order is from CDBaby, thanks to sampling them on progstreaming. My confirmation e-mail from CDBaby doesn't say CDBaby loves you like they used to. I am so bummed.
OK did just get this - Your CD has been gently taken from our CD Baby shelves with sterilized contamination-free gloves and placed onto a satin pillow. A team of 50 employees inspected your CD and polished it to make sure it was in the best possible condition before mailing. Our world-renowned packing specialist lit a local artisan candle and a hush fell over the crowd as he put your CD into the finest gold-lined box that money can buy. We all had a wonderful celebration afterwards and the whole party marched down the street to the post office where the entire town of Portland waved "Bon Voyage!" to your package, on its way to you, in our private CD Baby jet on this day, November 13, 2014. We hope you had a wonderful time shopping at CD Baby. In commemoration, we have placed your picture on our wall as "Customer of the Year." We're all exhausted but can't wait for you to come back to CDBABY.COM!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Sigh... We miss you already. Edited by Slartibartfast - November 13 2014 at 20:11 |

I buy my music exclusively from the same Russian biker gang I get my magic mushrooms and illegal firearms from.

Hi, I'm not in the market for sales. Many folks, are, though! Honestly, I would not use ANY of the places out there, unless they came to me, and offered me money for the distribution and the deal was better than what I'm doing! You already know that isn't possible, unless you are not interested in the business side of thigns, but you want the benefits from a major corporation, and you want to see that check for 200 grand that you picture and put on the wall to show how vain you are! The whole "progressive" thing, since its inception, has been about breaking the corporate control to find the freedom to play what you feel you need to do ... and my question is, why are you going backwards? You can NOT have that freedom, if you owe someone something! And heaven forbid that one song sells, and you have to repeat it for the next 10 years to honor the contract, and they make money, and you get disillusioned by the whole thing! It all depends on what the music means to you ... the rest you really don't need. Look in the mirror, and wake up! |

Just forget it Greg. Pedro's sentiments are based on a culture that ceased to exist many years ago......and then again it didn't even exist then as it got demolished at The Isle of Wight festival as well as in the flick 'Festival Express'. Both happening in 1970. Musicians back then ate food and slept in beds, which meant they too were in it for the dough. They may not have stated so and perhaps at times even spoken out against it, but it's very easy to make such grand notions when your bank account is high in the green.
I honestly don't think he understands how hard it is to make a living from playing music these days with the current downloading zeitgeist, as well as the illegal one. Edited by Guldbamsen - November 16 2014 at 12:40 |

time to pick up the sidearms left at the log-in desk, and slap on the 10 gallon hats and take a big ol' wad of chew. This has the wiff of good ol' PA's on it. Time for some popcorn!! |

The naivite that you write about this is so glaringly visible, that it is bizarre that anyone would even pay attention to anything you say!
Life doesn't exist until you say so!
And heavne forbid Pedro would say that you should RUN YOUR OWN BUSINESS, not someone else!
Goodness sakes ... get your momma to change your diapers again?
