I guess Snow Dog has a right to his opinion.
Although I am a staunch Yes fan, I can understand why they can be annoying to many people.Ok they're overindulgent, pompous, call them what you like: but that's prog rock in the end. IMO the whole point of Prog is experimentation and pushing the limits of the "envelope". Yes are just that, the very foundations of Prog.
Prog without Yes would be like the Impressionist movement without Monet, or even worse, Prog without the Mellotron!!! both possible, but man what a void to fill.

Yes = good.
Not the best band, and not the worst. They were fantastic with thier orginal line-up. Once White was on drums, things were not as good. Then after that, it all went to hell. But, seriously, they are a fine band and should be check out by all prog fans.

From The Yes Album to Tales (i.e., 7174), Yes is one of my favorite prog bands. Love Yes in that period.
Never been a huge fan of Relayer as many Yes fans are, mostly b/c it seems a bit noisy to me, and that Cha Cha Cha part seems "cheesy" (as used here meaning annoying to the point that the band ought to be embarrassed). I often skip Sound Chaser just so I won't have to hear that part. I like Going For The One but pretty much lose interest in Yes' work after that.

I don't mind their first two albums - I'd listen to them more if it wasn't for Jon Anderson. I agree, his voice sucks, and his harmonies raise my hackles - really nasty!
But those later boring, noodly, directionless affairs?
What a waste of talent.

In answer to your question. No I dont consider them cheesy at all. I once read a sociological study of why it was that so many mourned someone they didn't know, and it made for very depressing reading, and I dont want to go into it now.
We've all indulged in 'cheesy' moments in concerts or wherever. Dont take the idea too seriously.

If I asked that question , it is because the first real time I got tothink about what cheesy meant was when I heard someone suggest that all of those people were so cheesy (thickly agreeable and consensual and overly willing to participate in mass communion) while watching the news back in 97 at those funerals.
Besides that, I am a huge cheese fan , especially raw milk ones.
As for Yes , they are somewhat over-rated in my book. But from Yes Album to CTTE , Relayer and Keys studios, great stuff. However, they were also very pompous - TFTO, Union, Magnification. I guess in some way they might be cheesy but they are also elitist.

I'm partial to a bit of cheese myself, I must admit, but not the stinky kind. Only mild ones.
Of all the prog bands I have bothered to subject my freinds to, Yes are the one that gets the definate thumbs down every time, which is a shame because they have made some brilliant music IMO, CTTE being the most obvious example. Its Wakemens best album IMO. I also liked TFTO, although it took me some years to really appreciate it.

I think he was 60 last year. If his balls haven't dropped by now, I dont think it'll ever happen  Most peoples gripe with Yes, in my experience is either Jons voice or the general seemingly directionless flow of their music. They are the sort of band you have to persevere with.

...I find these guys REALLY boring. They are talented...agreed...They are progressive...yes..very progressive...but their style is such that every song kind of bleeds into the next. Also...my biggest gripe...Jon anderson's ANNOYING voice.
