RIO is one of those subgenres which I know next to nothing about. I know ABOUT the bands, like Beefheart, Zappa, Henry Cow etc, but I'd like to get into them. However, they're certainly not the easiest guys to get to know are they?

Unfortunately, John came fifth and was stuck with a toaster.

Most of the time I can't even tell the difference between Canterbury and RIO music. |
A little does confuse
Cantabians Robert Wyatt's End Of An Ear (possibly the first RIO album???) and Hugh Hopper 1984 are RIO
Henry Cow Legend is Canterbury styled - strong links to Machine's Volume 2 and Third
musically . And coincidently, just reached that part of Mike Barnes'
excellent biog on Captain Beefheart, where Cowian Fred Frith was
talking about Trout Mask's influences.
But check out the ReR's catalogue for a fuller range of 70's to 90's RIO.

the typical RIO is chamber music, having contemporary classical elements; ex.: univers zero, henry cow and zappa's classical work
canterbury comes with hatfield & the north, caravan, khan & soft machine: fender rhodes and unique guitar-keyboards combination.

I would like to get into some Rock in Opposition, but the only band
near that area I enjoy is The Muffins, who were always on the
canterbury side of RIO anyway
