A solid album -- "River" is another of my faves, and "Knots" is very clever and original -- good choice, Sir Dan!

'Knots' is certainly my favorite piece on 'Octopus,'
indeed one of my favorite Gentle Giant pieces,
because of its originality, clever lyrics, and classic
Gentle Giant instrumentation. However, the whole
album is fantastic (especially after repeated listens),
and 'Think of Me With Kindness' deserves
recognition as one of the most sensitive tracks ever
recorded by this band. Ironically, 'Octopus,' one of my
favorite albums, bored me the first couple of times I
listened to it.

Knots is my favorite even though nearly all Gentle Giant songs are phantastic...
 
btw this was my first GG album, I think it's a good one to start with...

I'm with moonchild and Peter.  It's simply too easy to vote for "Knots," given its place in the GG pantheon (which is very high).  This does not mean I think "Raconteur Troubador" is "second best," but rather equally good in a different way: it really conveys the "sense of what it is," if you know what I mean.

I've just voted for 'Knots'. Well, not an easy thingto do, since every track of this album is a masterpiece on its own right... without any one of them being too long. But definitely, I give it my gold medal (so to speak).

Easy, C'mon maani, grow some ..... yerself. You know that "Knots" placed GG in a class on it's own. A style copied by Spock, Echolyn and others because this tune alone created a unreachable goal. Never again attained... Instruments are cold, the voice, yes, the voice is the most personal instrument and this tune is IT, brother. Desert Island, nothing but coconuts and Jim's wild gyrations..... This tune is the ONE......

I voted for Raconteur Troubadour because of my wife's preferance for this piece.

Gentle Giant Octopus is prog-rock tour de force. Even classically trained musicians are fascinated by this work.

Knots is for me the most paradigmatic song for explaining that prog mantra of 'ou don't like it first, but it grows on you'. My first listen was 'What the h....!?'. But then it grew spectaculary in me, specially the really powerfull chorus.

By the way, recently I discover a truly gorgeous song in the Under Construction GG album. It's from their first recordings and called 'Freedom's Child'. It's not their typical complex GG song, but it's vey beautiful and should appeal a lot to Strawbs or Moody Blues fans.

I voted for River, but The Boys In The Band and A Dog's Life come close. But there is no weak track on the album, and Knots certainly deserves it's many votes.

River: I love the wonderful complex vibes solo with bass and drums and the vocals are like floating on a meandering river. It's like prog caviar!

Oct-opus - oct =8 and opus = a (musical) work : the album title is a nice pun.

WOW, I am in the minority bigtime here. My favorite is "The Advent of Panurge" (so funky and demented a rhythm!) and my second favorite song is "Think of Me With Kindness". All the songs are wonderful though so it's not like Knots and Troubadour are far off in my book

Raconteur Troubadour, then Advent of Panurge, then Knots, then Boys in the Band

Knots is great, but On Reflection is SO much better. It's like a more developed version of Knots.

A very hard decision but I think its either Advent Of Panurge, Raconteur Troubadour, or Knots.

I gotta go with the Troubadour!!!!  Perfect song and a real feast for the ears. I hear its influence in Kansas and Yezda Urfa.
