 Topic: Which singer got THE voice of prog IYO?

I am a big Gabriel-era Genesis fan, but if I must stay objective It's too brutal for me to choose. .
It's hard, but I finally say Gabriel.
Now it's your turn.

Peter Gabriel is definitely most recognizable among those voices. He may not be technically best, but his name is synonymous with prog. Most others on that list do not match his importance (IMO of course), or they are not as recognizable (PF may be more influential and popular, but most people do not know gilmour's or waters' voices distinctively). Geddy lee has a powerful and recognizable voice, but it is more often a source of antipathy toward prog (how often have i heard, "Does he really have to sing that high?").

There are many I can think of, but THE VOICE has to be Jon Anderson.

the question wasn't who is best, but who is THE voice.
IMO, it's very close between Gabriel and Anderson, but because Yes had more commercial recognition at that point, i'd have to go with Anderson. When i think PROG in general, i think of Anderson's high, unmistakeable voice.

^BTW, i'm not saying Hammill wasn't a great singer, because he was far better than Anderson, he just doesn't come to mind right away when i think of prog. But it's just a matter of opinion, to each their own.....

yes i believe he has the most beautiful voice in rock.

I know that many on that list haven't the same importance in prog generally, but I thought as I wrote that list that everybody should have a possibilty to vote his favourite, that's what the idea was all about. Everybody here got his favourite voice and that could be for a symphonic prog listener Peter Gabriel, Jon Anderson, Peter Hammill or someone else. A listener of prog metal can choose between Geoff Tate, James LaBrie, Mike Baker or else. Most people got a different taste when it comes to enjoy a voice of a singer and that could be very variable, if a singer is important for the historical background or less.

Jon Anderson for me. One of the most copied and imo the quintessential voice in prog.

When it comes to recognisability, Peter Hammill takes the bisquit. And he is much more influental in prog than most people realise. PH or VdGG may not be known to a big audience, but they are certainly known among musicians. Even Peter Gabriel admits to be influenced by him!

Daniel Gildenlow's voice is absolutely beautiful but I agree with most
here that Hammill has the most recongnisable and expressive voice and
is THE voice of Prog for me too.

I feel like some sort of spoilsport, but THE voice doesn't exist. Peter Gabriel, Peter Hammill and Greg Lake (to name just a few) have 3 completely different voices, but all 3 are very representative voices for prog. Gabriel's very versatile, story-telling way of singing, Hammill's intense and soulful way of singing and Lake's (sometimes) romantic way of singing.
