Is there a test that tells you which prog instrument, musician or band
that you are? Those tests that ask you a series of questions and then
you recieve some scientifically accurate answer?

Wow, I got 3 a's. Honest!... Yes, Howe and Peart. But I prefer Going For The One to Close To The Edge. Do I really need to worry? |

Normally I try to "feel" whether a piece is prog or not, and just pull one or two criteria out of a bag to justify my decision if a piece fails the acid test. As a rough top 10 in no particular order; 1) Does it feel like prog? 2) Does it rock? 3) Have the instrumentalists (including vocalist) managed to develop a style that sounds spontaneous and free-form, yet proves itself to be solidly structured - or even vice versa? Does this style uniquely identify the band? 4) How is the sound organised in time? If you listen closely, do a myriad of details swarm out from the depths, or is the surface all there is? 5) Is the soloing structured, in that it develops thematic material, or just a load of widdly bluff that are the soloists "trademark"...? 6) Does the music appear to be relatively root-free, or can it easily be traced to one particular style? If it can be traced to a particular style, does it also embrace other styles easily, or is it scared to lose its roots? 7) Does the music stretch the possibilities of the style it is developing, or simply change direction every time the ideas run out? 8) Does the music show a keen appreciation of the roots of the style(s) it is developing, or have a more simple focus on attempting to do something "a bit different"? 9) Does the music of an album - or series of albums - take you on a journey, emotionally, imaginatively or otherwise into a world away from the conventional? As a generalism, popular music relates more closely to the conventional themes of love and everyday life than progressive music, which has a tendency towards science fiction, mysticism and themes from literature. Prog won't settle on one particular theme either, except in a concept album. 10) Do your pop/rock-loving friends run screaming from the room or suddenly acquire a look of ever increasing boredom/uneasy miscomprehension when you listen to it with them? |
