Topic: Godspeed You! Black Emperor Posted: March 25 2005 at 17:22 |
Oddly i Couldnt find any topics whatsoever about these very talented Canadiens so i posted one myself. I actually discovered the band quite recently but they have grown to be one of my alltime favourit band and thats rare consider that they are still making albums. But then again their music arent so easy to find especially in an swedish surburban so at this point I own only one album (Lift Your Skinny...). Any others out there who really enjoys this klimax building fanatics and wishes to share their opinions about GYBE?

Use the search button at the top of the screen. GYBE has been covered, mainly in the FEATURED CD section.
I own Skinny Fists and Yanqui UXO. I find I have to be in a certain mood for them. The slow build needs more time then I usually have to truly appreciate the pieces. They are talented and worth checking out.
Welcome to the forum, BTW.

Yes thats true you ought to be in the mood i noticed. But when i am there is few modern bands who gives you more music for the money, if not no one.

I'm still trying to get to grips with them.
They remind me of a bizaare combination of Tangerine Dream,Philip Glass (Koyanasqaatsi era) and Pink Floyd. Peter discribes them as "head music" that's probably an accurate discription and as Danbo states the slow build up isnt always convenient for average car journeys or a quick listen before Dinner. There is obviously something intelligent going on so they are probably worth persevering with.

If it is intelligent I can not say, but it is that kind of music you really have to pay attention to to appreciate...otherwise its just passes your mind without remebering anything and you can not tell whether you liked it or not...

I believe GYBE are simply TRYING to be non-conformists. Writing music that in no possible way could be considered commercial, hence the length of the recordings. Nothing over 4-5 minutes (with VERY few exceptions) is ever going to be popular, so they write every piece as a mini opus. The sharp side of the blade is the fact that it takes a committment to listen to their music to enjoy it.
I would never put Thick as a Brick in the car for my daily routine, I want to hear it start to finish. It's not made for 8-10 minute car rides. When I have time alone, with 4 kids, not an easy task, I grab the long ones and wallow in self indulgence. Seems those times are coming less frequently as of late.

Godspeed are ultra-nonconformists. Way beyond my scope of nonconformity. One of their guitarists is a real zealot and extreme leftist. You really have to be in the right mood to listen to them. Usually a mood of hopelessness or sadness will do.
But they really are great.

I'm a huge fan (as you can probably tell by my display pic and my signature...). Slow Riot is my favorite, but i also really love F#A#infinity and Lift your skinny ...., I think their latest is kinda disappointing in some parts though.
But are you sure they're still making albums? I thought they're all working on their side-projects ...
btw, finally someone that puts the "!" at the right place after the "you" and not at the end

Indeed. They're giving no names in the booklet, just some forenames...They advise to not buy their albums in chain stores because they could profit by those sales
I think that proves that it's all about the music on every GY!BE album...

The band quite resents their popularity. I'm curious, how many people heard about them through Progarchives? (I did)
