Please Reed, No onet hat has the talent to release Voyage of the Acolyte, Spectral Mornings, Midsummer Night Dream, Tokyo Tapes or To Watch the Storms (Just to mention a few) can be cosnsidered a nobody.

His really talented and his work is outstanding.

A bit harsh there Reed.!! Ivan - I cannot add much more to your comments - I voted Steve Hackett because he is imo outstanding.

I also like Steve Howe - though he has not had the same success as a solo artist, I can not imagine some of earlier 'Yes' without him (Fragile and Close to the Edge). He also made a mark with his work with 'Asia' (thinking 'Aqua'). Once again a poll with difficult choices

I can't believe I'm the first person to vote for Howe. I like Steve Hackett..but where have all these mad Genesis fans suddenly come from?

He is really talented-as a guitarist. His song writing leaves me cold and disappointed.
His solo stuff is dreadful-in my humble opinion.

As a solo performer,he just cant hackett!Wink
If he was that good as a solo performer, all the Genesis fans would have gone out and bought his albums and he would be a multi-platinum selling artist! Go figure!Confused

Definately Steve Hackett. Gilmours solo work is good but can no way compare to albums like Spectral Mornings.

Well, he might have been a bassist, but, umm, Greg Lake is missing in there.

But to choose one from those... with all respect for Gilmour, Fripp, and actually that whole lot... YOU CAN'T DEFY THE ZAPPA.

Uhm yeah, clearly... But he has had an all-solo-career, to be honest. It has always been Frank Zappa [insert something].

Take it away!Angry

I'm fanatical about Hackett's classical-acoustic stuff, but apart from that... an enjoyable song or two on nearly all of his albums, but that's it.

In terms of being a progressive rock guitarist you would have to say Steve Hackett. That said, I don't think that his music changed a great deal since Selling England by the Pound.

Whereas Fripp has truly moved his music and style forwards from King Crimson to his work with Bowie, Blondie and Talking Heads, and back to King Crimson!

Of those listed, my favourite has to be Steve Howe whose range includes classical & acoustic to out and out rock 'n' roll.

Hi Fellas,

The best is Maestro Steve Howe, But I think the most beautiful guitar sound is David Gilmour's.

Best Greetings...

I only really rated 'Spectral Mornings' from Hackett's solo output, the rest also leaves me cold. Having said that, I don't really like any of Howe's solo output. From that list, Gilmour's About Face is defineatly tops.

Pity Trevor Rabin wasn't mentioned, because if you include soundtracks then he his by far the most successful on a commercial basis. Artistically, his albums Wolf and Can't Look Away blow any solo album by those listed off the planet!
