Topic: What prog guitarist...? Posted: March 24 2005 at 12:54 |
Thats about all I can think of, I'm sure you guys know of some others I am forgetting.
Personally though I think Steve Hackett has had the best solo career, very prolific and has put out a lot of solid work.

just other...None of the guitarists mentionned above satisfy my appetite
My fav are AL DI MEOLA and in a totally different style Keith ROW and Manuel GOTTSCHING: they are all categorised in prog (in a certain way)

Hackett continues to make quality prog, unlike his former bandmates. Overall, his solo work is of a high calibre.
Haven't heard much solo Gilmour....
Ant Phillips would be my 2nd choice.

People are actually voting for gilmor? I mean his solo stuff is okay... but have these people even heard stuff from the others mentioned on this list?

OK OK I guess I have to go with Hackett . He is certainly one of the
most prolific from the list . I love Gilmour`s album about Face but I
agree with Hangedman.

None of the above.
As a solo performer and guitarist Hackett is wildly over-rated.In my opinion his output since leaving Genesis has been patchy to say the least. If he wasnt "Steve Hackett,ex of Genesis" he'd be playing bar-mitzvahs and weddings after that load of tripe he keeps putting out. Take it away!
Dave Gilmour? I've only really listened to About Face,of his solo stuff but had at least one other on cassette. What can I say? Not alot-this is the reason these guys join bands, they just cant cut it as a solo performers.

Some of his solo work is sublime..... I agree with the Gilmour bit though, I love the Please don't touch album and Spectral Mornings...But it's all Opinion I suppose....

I have to agree more or less with Reed regarding Hackett, Ijust chose
him because he`s probably the most successful one from the list. None
of them really put out anything to get excited about individually but I
do like about face since it reminds me of an old girlfriend.
Jan Akkerman has managed to put out a few good solo records outside of Focus some of my faves are:
Tabernakel
Profile
From The Basement
Pleasure Point
10,000 Clowns on a Rainy Day (Live) It Could Happen To You
Noise Of Art
Live At Alexander`s
Blues Hearts
C.U.

I like Gilmour's two solo albums, but Hackett has been so prolific and creative since leaving Genesis that I can't pick anyone but him. I haven't heard any of Ant's stuff yet, but it is on my to-do list.

Steve Hackett. Poor Fripp, the better guitarist of the two, but hasn't done that well with his solo stuff.

Steve Hackett, definitely. Such a very diverse guitarist: rock, blues, classical, prog. As much as I love the other Steve (Howe), my vote goes to Hackett. He's got a lot of albums under his belt and he always manages to do something fresh and different each time.
