How may times do we need top go over this? The 'best' prog bands are as follows:

ELP

Rush

Genesis

Pink Floyd

Yes

Jethro Tull

King Crimson

Gentle Giant

Van Der Graaf Generator

Camel

Focus

Put them in whatever order you choose, but that is your lot.Anyone that thinks any other bands can touch those is wrong! (and in that I include one of my own personal faves IQ as well as all the neo prog bands and symphonic bands of the eighties and nineties ...as well as Dream Theater,Gong etc LOL)

Now carry on your pointless discussion

"OK, I knew when i was writing my first post, that there would be trouble with who invented prog. Truly, I don't care who invented it. But in my mind (anyone can have an opinion) KC were the first."

King Crimson were definitely not the first. The Nice made a largely prog rock album (Ars Longa Vita Brevis) in 1968 - before KC had even formed.

What about Giles,Giles and Fripp?? (didn't they make a very early prog album?)

Living in the past? Moi? Weren't you just arguing about a Pink Floyd album from 1967.

And Stand Up is much better than Living in the Past by the way.

I've only heard bits of that Richardh, but what I did listen to sounded more quirky folk/psychedelic to me.

If you add Caravan, then this proposal will be dealt with as a formality

The fact that Genesis is the number one band should end all discussion.

Sorry PF fans, but I do believe that you're overrating your favorite band. Proglucky is of the same opinion with me, check out his short description of Pink Floyd in the history page. http://www.progarchives.com/prog/1967-2004v1.html
I don't need anything to add to his views...

I do like some other bands better than KC myself, but I have to admit that it is the one group which embodies prog as a whole in itself. (the only sub-genre it misses is krautrock, because of not being german, well, zeuhl too, maybe!) It even sounds to me in some instances like parts of krautrock (some KC songs and some can songs sound very similar to me). This is something no other band (of course, as far as I know) achieved. Yes and Genesis are not that experimental. Jethro Tull and Floyd are even too poppy. Many others are not as symphonic as (early) King Crimson. Electronic bands? out of the question, they are stuck in one aspect (though TD very briefly managed to be symphonic, they quickly turned back...)

Not trying to end the discussion, just expanding my views (only to rage it on!!!)

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

Pink Floyd are the most accessible to the unwashed masses

Yes has the highest standard of instrumentation and greatest longevity

Jethro Tull deserves kudos for a one man effort

Genesis has the most truly great albums

King Crimson are the most progressive and innovative

Overall it would seem like Yes would go down as the greatest prog band ever or King Crimson as the most proggiest prog band ever but it may not be what people like best. Certainly there is complete crap on every KC album

How wonderful to be so profound

I agree with Tony R. how can you possibly compare these? Many wonderful progressive bands were completely left out, we reverted back to traditional genesis fans vs Yes fans et cetera.  The greatest ever is completely opinionated by this topic.

How can Genesis be the greatest ever if they made "We can't Dance" ???

that being said The greatest prog bands are :

Rush

Spock's Beard

Marillion.

Why because I like those bands

this is exactly why us proggers organize so much, we have 13 sub-genres.  The best classic symphonic prog band is between the "big five" or whatever that have been talked about most.

but The best progressive band may very well be Magma, or Dream Theater for that matter.  Rush has had the same lineup for 31 years and their music has certainly progressed.

The terms for this topic are worthless.  Specification is needed to do something we haven't already read on these message boards,

YES.

Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull are not on the same level as the truly important progressive rock bands, such as Yes, Gentle Giant, KC and ELP. Especially not Pink Floyd. Compares with Yes, or any of the others, they are just a boring rock band.

HAHA I love it. Though you've got quite a lot of bands as one god (Zues) which I find somewhat puzzling .  But that's still a very good classification system, I must say, silly as it might be, it does get the point across perfectly (the fact that its missing a bunch of great bands can be overlooked )

P.S. Mars Volta should be higher!!!!
