Who thinks Sax & flute fit into prog perfectly as any Mellotron or Hammond does?
Sax sure works for VDGG & Floyd's 'DSOTM'/'WYWH'
Flute is exceptional with Focus & Gravy train in fact i could'nt imagine the bands without it.

Jethro Tull would be naked without their flute. And early GENESIS to a lesser extent as well.
FLOYD's 5th instrument is the sax, very important to their sound for sure, Dick Parry's sax work is synonomous with the FLOYD.
Now what about cowbells and gazoos, two all but forgotten rock n' roll instruments?

The flute is an essential part of the Camel sound.
I like the use of non-traditional "rock" instruments in rock music - Gong used plenty of them to great effect - notably on the track this thread is named after

I think "Sax" has more place in Jazz - don't think it goes well with prog - Flute and woodwind - yes.....

Absolutely - although, I wouldn't say "to a lesser extent" with Genesis; I think Gabriel's flute playing is pivotal to pre 1975 Genesis.

Fltue, sax, trumpet, cowbell, clarinet, bassoon, and all those other wind instraments (and yes i kno the cowbell is not a wind instrament) fit perfectly into the progessive genre. I wish more bands would use them.

Don't forget SOLARIS or QUIDAM!! Great flute in the right places.
Not unlike our fellow member Man with Hat. I wish there were more prog bands with a woodwind/horn player in their line-up. The current progressive scene in South America has in the Argentinian quartet TANGER a perfect example of how a flute can fit well in a prog context. The Spanish band AMAROK has a sax player and a flute player in its line-up, which helps them to fulfill colourful landscapes of sound for their prog style rooted in Renaissance, Celtic and Arabic folk.

Sax - VDGG, early Crimson
Flute - Tull, Focus, early Genesis (even though it was pretty minimal), Moody Blues
Mellotron - Genesis, Yes, Crimson, Moody Blues
Hammond - ELP, Genesis
Violin - Crimson, Kansas, Mahavishnu Orchestra

Flute on Jethro Jull, damn basic, it is good on focus to, incredible on crimson's early works. Sax is great on several bands as well. So, i guess any kind of instrument can be added to prog rock, i mean, for me prog rock has this sort of flexibility that you woulndt find in other rock generes.
