ELP and Jethro Tull are ok, but not among my faves. My top 6 would be: Yes runner-up - Caravan |

Out of the given choices, i'd have to say Yes, although King Crimson
and PInk Floyd do come in a close, tied second place. Genesis wasn't
around long enough and did deteriorate a little towards the end. Yes is
the only band that still manages to hold a huge name for themselves in
the modern world where they are considered dinosaurs. I saw them twice
in concert in the past year and boy, they still have. Over the course
of 35 yeards they have managed to progress in the true sense of the
word, with different styles of rock, different band formations, etc.
I do admit that King Crimson perhaps personifies the term "prog" slightly better, but Yes' music does more wonders to me than King Crimson could ever do, i find listening to them "hard" a lot of the time, while Yes is always a pleasure. ANYWAYS In order: Yes Pink Floyd King Crimson Genesis ELP Gentle Giant Jethro Tull (Not a fan of either Gentle Giant or Jethro Tull, but hoping to become one!) |

OK, I knew when i was writing my first post, that there would be trouble with who invented prog. Truly, I don't care who invented it. But in my mind (anyone can have an opinion) KC were the first. And concerning The Piper at The Gates of Dawn: I don't think this is a very prog album. Perhaps "Astronomy Domine" and "Interstellar Overdrive" (IMO pointless song, not the best on the cd) could be prog, but overall it is a pop album, albeit a skewed one with fantasy subject matter that would have a tough time finding its way onto the radio. Saucerful of Secrets may be a bit more proggish, but I wouldn't call it the first prog album. Atom Heart Mother's title track is the only prog song on the album IMO, but I like "Fat Old Sun" more. Besides Animals, Ummagumma may be Pink Floyd's most prog album, but I believe it came too late to be the first in prog. As for the rest, I think it's art rock with flourishes of prog. Except for The Wall, that pure classic rock. The Final Cut is a Waters solo album at it's best. |
