Yes and Genesis are in my Top 3 favourite bands, but let's put things into perspective. The largest part (ie over 50%) of both group's output is RUBBISH. Read the discographies and do the math!!!!!

Why put your e-mail on your profile if you don't want people to use it?

When we are talking whole catalog it goes to Pink Floyd. Pipers thru the wall is 11 straight for excellent albums for my taste and their 80's albums are at least okay. Simply bigger catalog of great music that I enjoy. Genesis falls abart in the 80's to the point I've "I can't stand I can't dance" If we replace stop Genesis when Peter left and pick up there with Peter's solo then I would take them over Pink Floyd. Yes really was just 6 albums for me the rest was just okay.

Holy God, why nobody mentions Steve Hackett, I like Peter's carees as soloist, but IMO Steve Hackett is far more prolific and he maintains closer to the prog' style of Genesis than anybody else in the band.
He is surely underrated.

Funny. I have never been especially fond of neither Yes, Genesis nor Pink Floyd (or ELP for that matter)
The earlier the better for the whole bunch, IMO. But even the early records miss that special something.
At the same time as these big acts of the 70s achieved their status in
the history of rock music, the "grandeur" and pomposity found its
justification. But since I have not had the chance of following these
groups' careers chronologically, that pomposity is, even though only
just the slightest of bits, over the top, and that grandeur seemingly
non-existant.
Don't get me wrong, I do like them all. It just seems to me that I
everytime I feel good about listening to any of these big names I have
to justify that good feeling to myself somehow - whereas digging the
music of some less known (or generally unknown) group doesn't have such
a prerequisite...
I don't know if any of this makes any sense to you lot.
Cheers
-Beau

Hey Reedy baby!
I do dispute your 50% of Genesis albums are RUBBISH statement Iunless of course you were joking)
Good or better:- Trespass, N.Cryme, Foxtrot, Live, Selling England, Lamb, Trick, Wind, Secondsm, and then there were three, Duke, Abacab, Three Sides Live, Archive 1 & 2 = 15
Not so good and rubbish (although as pure pop they were excellent) :- Genesis, Invisible Touch, We Can't Dance, The Way we Walk 1 & 2, Calling all Stations. (for more genuine rubbish see over 50% of Tony Bank's solo stuff) = 6
Correct me if I'm wrong my little Reed flower but I make that less than 50%!
Look I've had enough....ok ok ok I'm gonna put Yes in my top 3 prog bands of all time. They are an honary member of my top 3. I mean I havn't heard anything yet but what the hell
It's been a great debate Mr Fragile and I'm not that far behind you in age, maybe 10 yrs or so, I saw Genesis, Black Sabbath, and Scorpions in 79! But my next prog outing did not happen until around 85 when I saw It Bites and Saga.

I only used Genesis as an example, the same could easily apply to YES!!
ATTWT,Duke,Abacab,3Sides are "below average" at best and you are not having Archive! That leaves 10, the rest 10 so 50%!
Whether we agree on which are good/bad you can see the point I'm making!
BTW I too saw Genesis,Black sabbath and Scorpions in 1979-in Manchester!!!

Hiya Reedy
Re the 'Rubbish' debate:- For a conclusive settlement of this litte banter please see progarchives.com's own ratings on all of the above. The only one I'll concede on is Abacab that got 2.43 out of 5! I mean come on it was 0.7 under, surely that does not equate to 'Rubbish'? ... and Dodo was great!!
And as for Archives 1 & 2 you have to say they were above average because there were a lot of good unreleased tracks on them such as 'Twilight Alehouse' and 'Evidence of Autumn' plus 'Spot the Pigeon and the only full live performance on a commercially produced disc of 'The Lamb' .
BTW I saw Sabbath and Scorps at the Southampton Gaumont (when it was alive) and Genesis at Hammersmith which was the one and only time I saw them as they quickly moved to Stadiums after that which I hate to see good music performed in. Did you ever see 'It Bites' or 'Saga'?
Have you or anyone seen G2?

When it comes to emotion, Genesis & VDGG have a substantial headstart over Yes!

Ok
I've listened to 'Siberian Khatru' and here's my judgement:-
It's a very average track, nothing special. In fact it's a mess! It is badly recorded (very badly mixed - needs a wider pan, its practically monaural).
I'm now listening to 'And you & I' as I type and It's better! I like the different mood. Nice accoustic beginning. I'm expecting something good here. Love the unusual bass line with the accoustic guitar, this is looking promising. I can hear Anderson's words at the moment, that's always a plus. Like the synth (eh synth? when was this recorded? maybe I wes hearing a guitar solo?) Vocal melody has become a little tedious though, drums are uninspired at the moment. Aha suddenly the accoustic guitar has gone all Celtic or something...I like that!,,,,oh dear....what's that awful bass fret work..should be smoother..very amaturish keyboard solo...suddenly it all slows down to an end with Anderson's reprise of the vocal melody and then nothing............but what's that i hear.....it's the next track, 'Soon',.....Now that sound's promising....good lead guitar, and keyboards...Oh but I'm not supposed to be judging that am I!!
Ok guys I've listened to 2 out of 3 of the tracks on CTTE as they also reside on the 'Ultimate Yes' album. There is nothing to suggest anything special in fact Renaissance do pretty much the same kind of thing but with a whole lot more feeling and better production. The Beatles had better production ten years earlier. I can imagine if you have a leaning towards Mozart as opposed to Chopin or Rachmaninov you would enjoy this music. Personally I find Mozart irritatingly simplistic. As I said before i need more subtlety and feeling and if you are putting forward CTTE as an example of Yes's best work then you must be 'devoid' of emotion. This isn't about who is better. It's an adjudication of a piece of music. Beautiful melodys give you feeling and emotion as do certain chord progression and combinations of instruments. Apart from odd moments this does not exist in these two tracks. I would not waste my money on CTTE. I will listen to these tracks again though in case i change but I can't see how.
PS Guess what, thanks to ProgArchives I have just downloaded the title track CTTE! i have the whole album now and tomorrow I will listen to all of it in order and give my final opinion. I am tired now and need to go to sleepybise!! zzzzz zzzzzz zzzzzz zzzzzzz

Hello Fragile
Hi Fragile
Please indicate which particular bit of my little 'Live comentary' on the tracks mentioned that tickled you the most?
It was an honest, reflection of what came into my mind as I listened! Why don't you do the same for 'and you and I' and I could then have some sort of idea what goes thru your mind when you listen to it?

Not even as an example Reed, you know I'm a critic of Collins Genesis, but to be honest Ribbish is only the smaller part, to value a career you must only care for studio albums, or even Live albums, but not compilations:
Great albums and/or Masterpieces:
- Trespass
- Nursery Cryme
- Foxtrot
- SEBTP
- Live
- The Lamb
- ATOTT
- W&W
- Seconds Out
- Spot the Pigeon
- Archives I
Not so bad, still good moments
- From Genesis to Revelations
- ATTW3
- Duke
- 3 Sides Live
- Archives II
Talk whatever you want about these
- Abacrap (Sorry Abacab)
- Shapes (Refuse to call that thing Genesis)
- Invissible Touch
- We Can't Sing, Dance or whatever
- ATTW2 (CAS)
So, from 20 releases we're talking about
50% Masterpieces or near to be called masterpieces (10 Albums)
25% Good albums or at least average (5 albums)
25% Whatever you want (5 albums)
Your percentages are a bit mistaken
