How can one call an album containing a passage with lute boring? The only boring thing about TAAB is the first 5 minutes of side 2. And to place Tull in one special genre would be awfully wrong!

The ranking sytem is quite clearly useless:

1. Thick As A Brick - 38 reviews ,84% 5 star reviews, thats about 33 'masterpeice' ratings

2. Selling England By The Pound - 113 reviews ,82% 5 star reviews,thats about 100 'masterpeice' ratings

3. Close To The Edge - 142 reviews,87% 5 star reviews,that's about 125 'masterpeice' ratings

Even down at No 48. you've got ELP 'Brain Salad Surgery' with 68 entries and 62% 5 star reviews, that's more 5 star reviews than the No1 album!

I would be happy if Close To The Edge was NO1.I'm slightly baffled as to why it isn't.

Task for bluetailfly: Explain how you are ordained with such powers as to proclaim to speak for all prog fans?

Okay, Mr. Possessed. Let me turn it back on you. Do you believe that if a poll was taken across this forum, that "Thick as a Brick" would emerge the #1 choice?

And, at times, Mr. Processed, I do believe one can speak for a group of people to whom they feel a kinship. For instance, I believe I can speak for most King Crimson fans by stating that "Cat Food" is probably not the #1 song of all KC fans. Much as I like the song, I know enough about KC fans to pretty safely conclude it wouldn't be #1. Does this bother you that I say this?

So, Mr. Processor, I don't really find that my speaking for a group of people to be so objectionable in this situation (except to you).

Getting back to the point, I was more concerned as to how this #1 rating is determined. If in fact, Tull's "Brick" did turn out to be the #1 album choice of all prog forum members, I would back off and say, wow, I must have been wrong in my assumption of prog fans and their favorites. But until such time, I believe most prog fans, would not choose "Brick."
Whether you are tired of seeing "Thick As A Brick" as #1 or not, it is the overwhelming consensis of the people who have reviewed and rated that album.

Don't proclaim to speak for all Tull fans. I think it is worthy. Stop whining. The world does not revolve around you.
Uh...okay, dad.

The point is I don't think it is the overwhelming consensus of all people who've rated albums. I think the logic by which they determined this is not taking other considerations into account.

I think it's pretty clear to most prog fans (and yes, at this moment, I do proclaim to speak for them; forgive my audacity) do not see "Brick" as the #1 prog album of all time. Of course its a great album and it's worthy of being discussed among the greats, but, if we must rate them, I believe it is the #1 choice of a small minority.

Task for Possessed: Using the small part of your mind isn't caught up in self-righteousness, try to imagine how the prog rock rating system might allow this to happen, even if its not really the choice of them members of the list. I know it may be hard for you, but I think you can get there.

Peace.

Forgot to mention, second prize is TWO Cliff records!

(By the way, did you know the band Biffy Clyro is named after free pens offered by his fan club, i.e. Cliffy Biros!)

Reed far be it from me to convert you but Thick as a Brick, Not Tull in General, is what we are discussing.  I think the album moves in a very distinct progressive line with great use of the hammond, flute and guitar and no synths. It is originial in its concept and the use of the said instruments. I love the solo spots in the middle of the first section and the end of the fisrt section when the hammond comes screaming in.

The first 22 minute section to me is the best thing JT ever did. If it comes across to you as too much English folk (which is what I think you mean by Hey-Nonnie-Nonnie) it was kind of something unique to others not from England. There is a particular dynamic in this work that I think really set some standards for others of it's day.

Not only one of the best prog rock albums but one of the best rock albums period.

Disagreements are good. Without them the forum would be dull dull dull. (First one to rhyme dull with Jethro Tull gets a Cliff Richard CD!)
