It's OK that KARN-EVIL has a go at everyone - HE even sent a fairly hostile e-mither to my home e-mail account - now that is SAD !

When it comes down to comparing 2 classic bands (I don't factor in
Floyd, as they shouldn't even be mentionned in the same breath), I look
at the penultimate albums and compare the best of the best.
Yes wins by a bloody landslide. Not even close IMO.

Pink Floyd by a mile.
I don't really like Genesis that much,only Peter Gabriel solo. 
And with Yes,some of the albums are excellent,some are good,but not my type.

Yes.Close To The Edge is probably the greatest ensemble prog recording.Incredibly talented band that nailed it down tight.Genesis and Pink Floyd probably created 'deeper' music but Yes were always focused on what they were trying to achieve.Slam on the headphones and go on a trip!

Having recently bought The Yes Album AND Relayer, I have to say that Yes takes the cake in all categories. It took me a while to warm up to Relayer, but it becomes more enjoyable every time I listen to it. The Gates of Delirium is the best. The drum parts on Sound Chaser are outstanding. And how can you beat Yours is no Disgrace off The Yes Album?

I don't think Genesis is in the same league as Pink Floyd, and I don't think Floyd comes close to Yes.

'always focused on what they were trying to achieve' - er what was that? No I'm genuinely interested, I want to know what it is about Yes's music that has prompted this tight two horse race. You say they were not deep, did you mean lyric wise, technically, or musically?
I am determined to get to the bottom of this. I will go out and buy 'Close to the edge'. Is that the best one? Is this the album with 'Wondrous Stories'? I have to say that so far I have found Yes to be cold and devoid of light and shade. Rick Wakeman was very mechanical in his style that never left me amazed at the way his solo's made sense in the same way that Tony Banks did. Banks had feeling and a wonderful knack of doing the right thing at the right moment - Example - his solo's in Cinema Show, firth of Fifth, In the Cage, and Supper's Ready to name but a few. His intros on tracks like 'Watcher of the Skies' and Firth of Fifth were outstanding. Howe was technically very nimble across the frets but nothing he did sent a shiver down my spine in the way Hackett did on Firth of Fifth. Jon Anderson had a whiney voice that tired after just a few listenings. Gabriel and even Collins (prior to Abacab) were infinitely more poetic, more dramatic.
But after all of this I beg to be shown the better way and would appreciate knowing what is Yes's 'Selling England' or 'Trick of the Tail'. If 'Close to the Edge' is the album with 'Wondrous Stories' on it then I rember hearing that track and thinking 'aha' here is the album that will give me the depth and complexity I am striving for. Then as I listened to further tracks i realised this was the only track that fitted that bill. I really do want to like Yes - Please help as there must be a reason for the votes it has picked up. Is it that Yes were a 'blokes' band and Genesis were the 'thinking man's' band?

Dear Bilbo Baggins.
CTTE is the album with CTTE on it, B-side consists of And You And I, and Siberian Kathru, Wonderous Stories is from Going for the one, which indeed isn't the best of albums Yes ever conceived.
To fully apreciate the marvelous soundscapes Yes ever produced, you might want to check their debut album up to The Yes album, maybe skip fragile, but make sure you'll listen to CTTE, it will be a good introduction to their more melodic side, Relayer and Tales from topographic oceans may be a bit on the difficult side (needs time to sink in)
Don't deny yourself the possible pleasure of Yes, because they are not the easy listening type of band. (I say possible, for their is alway's the odd chance you really not like them)

Close to the Edge doesn't have Wonderous Stories on it. That song is on "Going for the One" Close to the Edge has "Close to the Edge", "And You and I" and Siberian Khatru"...
I realize I'm not that big of fan of Genesis... but as an ELP fan even, I don't think Genesis has anything that can stand up to Yes's Close to the Edge...

Even though Yes are THE band for technical ability, I voted for
GENESIS
I just like them quite a lot. Great song subjects (lyrics that actually mean something), great solos, great singing, great everything. Oh, and The Lamb...need I say more?

I enjoy less Yes than Floyd and Gabriel's Genesis.
Based on their total discography , Floyd is really the better pick because there are no stinkers. Even their worst (arguably Final Cut or Lapse Of Reason ) are much superior than Invisible Touch or Close Your Ears.
As for the most pleasure, I get it from making love to my girlfriend while Floyd is playing.

You don't know what album ' Wonderous stories' is on and if you have listened to 'Going for the One' then you will have heard one of rocks most beautifully sung,worded and played songs ever in 'Turn of the Century' Anderson a whiney voice!!!!!!!!! The man has the purest most emotional voice in music and his lyrics during the classic years were fantastic.You seem to know all about Genesis and who you prefer as opposed to the Yes men but know so very little about Yes;prog's greatest band!!!!! Methinks there is a small wind up at play.If you are indeed genuine then listen to the Yes album,Fragile,Close to the Edge then Relayer and if you still think in the same vogue then okadokay.But musicianship wise the Genesis boys are in second place.
