No, he's a soloist. He's sort of an isolated artist... can't think of any other big artists he's jammed with. I may be wrong though.

My brother was telling me the other day that Satch got his start filling in for Brian Jones shortly after he died during the American leg of that year's Stones tour. Can anybody verify this?

I'm sure somebody will correct> The story I'm told is Steve Vai, while with Zappa (or just after), decided to improve his guitarwork and ended with the Satriani the guitar teacher. Apparently Satriani's reputation then spread as the master shredder. As far as I've discovered the guy only looks up to is Allan Holdsworth (there is at least one long interview by Satriani of Holdsworth in 80's guitar magazines); ironically I feel the worst Holdsworth or Satriani recording is the one they did together IMHO, Radio Free Albumuth (on a Stu Hamm album of the same name). Personally, I find little to hold my attention across a number of Satriani albums (Surfing With The Alien having its moments). As I've said elsewhere, somebody might be the best musician in the world but without a decent set of tunes/compositions, that musician will  keep the musos only happy and the rest of us bored. This tends to be true with other highly skilled/technically able shredders - however, when they do covers then watch out for fireworks! For instance,  I've tried 5 Yngwie Malmsteen albums, and find his covers album Inspirations is way ahead, probably because he is playing some great tunes. The pretentiously titled The Infinite Steve Vai: An Anthology, (you might guess a compilation of Vai's recordings) is also one of those albums which highs of technically ability, and lows in tunes and arrangements - I challenge you sit through it in one sitting.

Satriani did take the lead guitar vacancy temporarily in Deep Purple , just before Steve Morse took up the poison challace. I eventually laid my ears on a 20 minute boot - it was so badly mixed that every time Jon Lord played any keys, Satriani was swamped out - however,  when Joe did get through the wash, he sounded his own man and fitted the task well.

satriani, without a doubt is the guitar god you been searching for .

I have a few of his albums and he is definitely a smoking guitar player. I picked up his latest album just before Christmas and it is right up there with Surfing With The Alien I l also grabbed the G3 album with Ywingie and Steve Vai and he is by far the most creative and accessible of the three. My vote went to # 2 cool rock grooves.
