I went to see the American power trio Mountain last night and they were brilliant.Does anyone agree (or disagree) that Nantucket Sleighride is a great slice of 'Prog Metal'? Corky Laing's drumming on this track is as dynamic as anything Bruford and Palmer produced while Leslie West was one of the best guitarists around without doubt.Pity they didn't do more tracks like Nantucket Sleighride although Don't Look Around runs it close.

I would say that Mountain is a hardrock band, but certainly a good one.

Nantucket Sleighride is a fantastic piece of music. It was used as the theme tune to a Sunday afternoon politics show in the UK called Weekend World Anyone remember that?? For years I never knew who that artist was. For some reason I assumed it Focus - I dont know why. Someone on this forum confirmed for me that it was Mountain. I love the drumming in that song, and that great Hammond organ. Its got a real prog/metal feel to it I would agree. Generally though, what I've heard of Mountain is not prog, just hard rock. Pretty good all round though.. |

/QUOTE] Surely Mountain was Born out of Felix Pappalardi's love of Cream, so heavier blues rock perhaps. Didn't the heaviness (and over-indulgence) came with the Mountain/Cream merger, West Bruce & Laing - but I'll still listen keenly to Jack Bruce's live solo Powerhouse Sod. Oddly I've long thought of Nantucket Sleighride as a rare outing into (heavy) prog, especially if the prefacing track Taunta is considered part of the piece.
Yes I remember (was it introduced by) Brian Walden's Weekend World - exposure to the intro and outro induced me to buy the album. Quiz time (sorry about the UK slant): Which arts programme had Eno's Another Green World as its theme. Which radio programme played PF's Money ad nausea, daily as its theme for what seemed 20 years? Who did and what was the theme to the radio and TV versions of Hitchkikers Guide To The Galaxy? Which double album did BBC raid regularly for instrumental backing music to its science programme Horizon in the late 80's and 90's? Name four artists who have covered The Radio One Theme And why has the British labour party just adopted a rock/pop tune by an Irish band to see it through the next general election - when it just about worked for a soccer highlight programme???

I'm not sure who did it but I remember it the title being 'Journey Of The Sorceror'. ![]() Edited by sigod |

I reckon there are two sides of CD that could be filled by relatively obscure tunes lifted off rock albums for TV and radio theme music. Problem is I can only remember 20 minutes worth at the moment - more please! |

Re Quiz :Theme One was covered by Van Der Graaf Generator and Cozy Powell, can't think of any others off the top of my head. Mountain were a hard rock band indeed.Leslie West was highly regarded by Pete Townsend who reckoned he was even better than Hendrix! |

Excellent track and, in my opinion, it's a pity that all the band's tracks are not in the same vein. I have the album "Nantucket Sleighride" just for that one track (but can listen to the other tracks happily enough).
