Hey,all you xenophobic Yanks, read thisEmbarrassedEmbarrassedEmbarrassed

Singer Islam gets libel damages
Yusuf Islam Cat Stevens
The singer was barred entry to the US last September
Yusuf Islam, the singer formerly known as Cat Stevens, has won substantial damages by two UK newspapers which falsely claimed he supported terrorism.

The Sun and Sunday Times also published apologies after they made the false allegations in two articles in October.

The papers claimed the US authorities had been right to refuse Mr Islam entry into the country in September.

Mr Islam said the settlement cleared his good name, and the damages would help victims of the Asian tsunami.

Both newspapers have now acknowledged that Mr Islam is not, and never has been, involved in or supported terrorism, and that he abhors all such activities.

Peace award

They also pointed out that Mr Islam was recently presented with the Man for Peace award by a group of Nobel Peace Laureates.

The harm done is often difficult to repair
Yusuf Islam

The newspapers have undertaken not to repeat the false allegations and also agreed to pay Mr Islam's legal costs.

Mr Islam said he was "delighted by the settlement" which he said "helps vindicate my character and good name".

The singer, who converted to Islam in 1977, was thrown out of the US after his flight from London was diverted from Washington to Maine.

The 56-year-old said afterwards he was well treated but only found out his name was on a "no-fly list" when he switched on the television to hear the news in the hotel room he was put up in.

After he won the libel damages on Tuesday, Mr Islam said: "It seems to be the easiest thing in the world these days to make scurrilous accusations against Muslims, and in my case it directly impacts on my relief work and damages my reputation as an artist.

"The harm done is often difficult to repair."

Yusuf Islam intends to contribute the damages from both newspapers to projects for orphans which he has started in tsunami-hit South East Asia.

'No explanation'

He visited Indonesia in January and is set to release a charity single entitled Indian Ocean later this month.

"I have been supporting orphans and needy families for many years now," and I don't intend to stop," he said.

"I have never knowingly aided any terrorist group or any charitable organization that equips or supports terrorists.

"I will continue working for peace and supporting the poor and destitute around the world."

The singer added that he still did not know why he was put on a 'no fly' list.

"Six months after the fiasco of my deportation from the USA, my formal requests for clarification from the authorities there are seemingly being ignored," he said.

"Instead, I am hearing reports second, third or even fourth-hand through the media citing US officials attempting to offer explanations".

I wish i could find the original thread on this.......Confused

I read in a newspaper last Sunday that the US barred Stevens/Islam from entry to the US recently because of his donation of GBP 8,000 (or was it 10,000?) about 8 (or was it 10?) years ago to the UK branch of a Muslim charity whose US office has been shut down by the US authorities. The UK branch is still operating and has changed its name and disassociated itself from the US branch. Apparently the US wants the UK to shut down the UK branch too. I can't remember the exact details, but that's the gist of it.

Armed with facts like that, you're sure to win any argument!

Apparently, according to Threefates, he once said some threatening things about American Imperialism and therefore became an enemy of the people of the USA. The basic premise of her argument supporting the celebrated pacifists' expulsion from American soil was "why take the risk?"LOLLOL

While we're on the subject - during the Salman Rushdie affair, I remember Yusuf Islam condemning the book (which he was entitled to do) and calling for it to be banned (wrongly IMO, but still within the acceptable boundaries of free speech) but I don't recall him explicitly condoning any violence towards Rushdie himself. I may well be wrong here, and if anyone can produce a verifiable quote which proves this then please post it. Otherwise, please accept that there is no inherent contradiction between writing 'peace train' and being offended by an extremely tedious novel.

Dead

Cat Stevens has never done anything offensive outside of his recording career.....

I still think there will be a track on the next Marillion album about it.  You could lay good money on it.

You & me both, Reed (Oh, God, I've done it again - I've agreed with you...).

I think I'm right in saying the original offence taken at 'The Satanic verses' (apart from the extreme tediummmmmmmmzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz - why did I read it, knowing his writing style from 'Midnight's Children'?) was there was mention of a brothel where each young lady had the name of one of Allah's wives....

I finished it as well, although (unless I was missing something extremely obvious) he'd said all he had to say in the first 100 pages.

Reed:

I've said some threatening things about U.S. imperialism, but I don't consider myself an enemy of the people of the United States...

Sigod:

I agree.  For those who don't know, Marillion was on the plane with Y. Islam when it was diverted.   S. Hogarth spoke about this when threefates and I met him at the NYC show.

Peace.

I'll stand by my old view- that the US has a right to deny a visitor for any reason (especially during our citizens' heightened anxiety over airplane-related dangers). If he'd been a US citizen unjustly detained or interrogated, that would be a different story.

You may dislike the predjudice implied by the US actions, but there was no cruelty beyond forcing him to alter his travel plans. I guarantee you all that I would be turned away from several countries that permit his entry- and I'm no terrorist either. Of course, I have no 'good name' to collect on afterwards...

Read the sign over the bar: "We have the right to refuse service."

A humble and publicity-shunning man, Yusef is almost never referred to without praise for his efforts for peace and charity (including on his own website- in addition to his mastery of the acoustic guitar, he's learned how to toot his own horn). Of course, his greatest gift to the world may have been when he gave up the music business- shortly after his third single showed the extremely narrow range of his talents.

Ahhh, that felt good. I've rid myself of all my negativity in one post.

Much as I respect your opinion, I believe that to applaud or condone the USA's actions is to completely ignore the events of the last 3 years.Ok-so I talk with the benefit of hindsight, but where is this threat? The actions against Cat Stevens were based on loathing and bigotry-nothing else. All this talk about his being a danger to the American people is embarrassing and just perpetuates the myth that every American citizen is a gun-toting, bible-bashing, red-necked half-wit.

Just because you have the right to refuse admission doesnt measn you use it to oppress individuals. The Bin Laden family was welcomed with open arms regularly despite having concrete connections to terrorism.Confused

I don't see where there has been any proof given as to his innocense... any one can get a good lawyer...

Well I was always taught that you were innocent until proven guilty.

I have never heard one thing proven that he did wrong.  Was he charged with a crime at any time?

I don't honestly suspect him of terrorist ties, and he's never commited nor been accused of a crime as far as I know. Just because he irritates me doesn't make him a bad person.

But I don't think it's is all that unreasonable to restrict visitation to a country that is engaged in a war (even a war that I'm not a big fan of, if you were wondering )...by no means is it comparable to the Asian detention camps during WWII, or any other historical act of persecution. So far our conduct towards Muslims off the battlefield has been fairly atrocity-free for once, and I'd love to keep it that way- in order to retain whatever national pride we can still muster (plus, I'd like as few people to get hurt or killed as possible- but that's just my hippie idealism, right? ).

Do we suspect Muslims more that is deserved? Yeah, I think many of us do. Is this particular act an example of causing suffering? Not enough to earn my protest. If you're looking for incidences of our terrorist paranoia- that are actually worth the vigilant eye of the true patriot and lover of freedom- there are several more important ones going on right now that we could be talking about...
